Request to be the primary admin or contact

Learn how to request to be the primary admin or contact for a QuickBooks account.

If the primary admin or contact is unavailable to transfer the role to you, it’s okay. Even if they’re not around or can’t make the change on their own, you can send a request to our account protection team. Here's what to do.

Step 1: Gather documents for your request

To protect your account and data, we need documentation to verify that you have rightful ownership or access privileges for the account.

The business type and ownership determines which documents we need to verify and assign a new primary admin or contact. Review the following section to find out what you need to provide.

What type of business is this?

Who owns the business?Documents required
I'm the owner.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • Your company number.
I own no part of this business.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The owner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The owner's company number.
  • A letter of permission from the owner.
Who owns the business?Documents required
I'm the owner.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
I own no part of this business.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The owner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from the owner.
Who owns the business?Documents required
I'm the sole owner.
I'm the majority owner.
You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of Incorporation.
  • Articles of Association.
I'm a 50/50 owner.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • Your business partner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from your business partner.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of Incorporation.
  • Articles of Association.
I'm a minority owner.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The majority owner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from the majority owner.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of Incorporation.
  • Articles of Association.
I own no part of this business.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • One of the owners' (either sole, majority or 50/50 owner's) photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A Permission Letter from the Majority owner or if no Majority owner, permission letter with all appropriate owner signatures.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of Incorporation.
  • Articles of Association.

  • A letter of permission from your business partner.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Certificate of incorporation.
  • Certificate of limited liability partnership.

  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • Your business partner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from your business partner.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Partnership agreement.
  • A letter of permission from the co-owner.
I'm a minority owner.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The majority owner's photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from the majority owner.

And the following business document indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Partnership agreement.
I own no part of this business.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • The owner's (or majority owner's) photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A letter of permission from the owner (or majority owner).

And the following business document indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Partnership agreement.
Are you the president or director of the non-profit?Documents required
Yes.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of charity incorporation or limited charitable company articles, or unincorporated association agreement or Trust Agreement.
  • Non-profit corporate bylaws.
  • Recommended: A currently dated board of trustee meeting minutes showing the chairperson or president by name along with who the newly designated Primary Administrator should be.
No.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A photo ID of the non-profit’s president or director (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A signed permission letter from the non-profit’s president or director.

And ONE of the following business documents indicating the owner/leadership by name and title:

  • Articles of charity incorporation or imited charitable company articles, or unincorporated association agreement or Trust Agreement.
  • Non-profit corporate bylaws.
  • Recommended: A currently dated board of trustee meeting minutes showing the chairperson or president by name along with who the newly designated Primary Administrator should be.
Are you the person in charge of what goes into this QuickBooks account?Documents required
Yes.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
No.You’ll need to provide:
  • Your photo ID (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A photo of the person in charge of what is going into this QuickBooks account (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).
  • A signed permission letter of the person in charge of what is going into this QuickBooks account (drivers licence, passport or certified photo).

Note:

If the primary admin or contact was the owner and is deceased then you’ll need to provide the same documents as above, plus a certified copy of a death certificate. You’ll also need to provide ONE of the following business documents:

  • Proof of Transfer of Ownership.
  • Power of Attorney or confirmation of executor of a Will.

Step 2: Sign In

You need to sign in with your email to view the form. If you don't see a form at the bottom of step three, sign in to your Intuit Account to access QuickBooks. If you don't have an Intuit Account, create one.

Once you've signed in, or have created an account, return here and refresh this page in your web browser.

Step 3: Complete the form

Important: Help us get your request approved quickly and safely. Please make sure:
  • You are signed in so you can see the form.
  • Your photo ID is unedited/unmarked and a valid drivers licence, passport or other certified photo.
  • You have all the required business documents you gathered in step 1.
  • The business documents show who is the owner, chairperson, or leader of the business operation.
  • All the documents are clear, legible and should not show your National Insurance number, to protect your privacy.
  • To provide a business licence or Quickbooks Desktop License (if applicable) when asked for a licence.
  • To select no for "Are you the owner of the business” for 50/50 or minority ownership business types.
  • To add documents indicating some ownership or authorship of the QuickBooks account if you are prompted for documents that are not applicable.

Note:

The form is currently only available in English.

Step 4: Look for our response and possible next steps

Your case will be reviewed as soon as possible. You will receive an update to the status of this request when we complete our review. Be on the lookout for an email from no_response@intuit.com.

If we approve your request

We’ll let you know that we transferred the primary admin or contact role to you. All you'll need to do is sign in using the email address you provided us the next time you use QuickBooks.

If we’re unable to approve your request

We’ll let you know why and what steps you can take. For example, we’ll let you know if a specific document is missing, illegible, or doesn't meet the criteria for approval. You’ll need to fill out the form again and upload all of the required documents for your security.
