Can t file VAT return


I cant file my VAT Rtn, receive the folloing message

An unknown error occurred while trying to generate the tax reportsuall 

I have already deleted history and cookies and disconnected and then reconnected wit HMRC.

I suppose the problem is because I adjusted  the VAT exceptions;

I am acutally prepring Balance 2019 nd as I only started using QB in March 2019 I added all transactions from January and February which no appear im my VAT Return but as these have already been paid I needed to adjust these VAT transactions; I adjusted Box 1, 4, 6 and 7 and created the follwing accounts:

Since you already cleared your cache/cookies and the issue persists, try using other supported browsers such as the following:


  • Google Chrome.
  • Mozilla Firefox.
  • Microsoft Edge.
  • Safari 11 or newer (Mac only).


If the same thing happens, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They have tools such as screen-sharing (remote access) that can pull up your account in a secure environment and the check why you can't file your VAT return. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps if needed.


Here's how to reach them:


  1. In QuickBooks Online (QBO), click the Help (question mark) icon at the top right.
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

Once you have paid off the liability to HMRC, you can record a payment or refund. Refer to this article for future reference: Record a VAT payment or refund [Video].

I am using Chrome and I tried to open a Chat but after I have given all th the detals the fiield is blank qnd nothing happens?

I am actually abroad; but thiscant cause the problem, I suppose

Have you tried using another browser? It could be that the one you're currently using has a temporary issue with QuickBooks. You may use any of the browsers listed by my colleague. Then, once signed in to your QuickBooks Online account, go to the Help menu and click Contact us to connect with a live agent.
