Hi, I am trying to submit my first VAT return via quickbooks.
Can I enter the figures manually on the return? I have not been able to work out how to do this, I cannot type over the 0's.
Do I have to set up the whole of quickbooks first so the correct numbers automatically appear ??
Hey Dr Chivago,
To product the VAT return you will need to enter the transactions with the applicable VAT code which will automatically populate the appropriate box on the VAT return to calculate your total VAT due.
If you are on the standard VAT scheme you are able to use the bridging tool to submit your return using a spreadsheet without having to enter the transactions manually into QuickBooks.
I am looking for help with a Vat issue.
We are registered with HMRC, but although in settings it says this is done, there is no icon on the screen and I am not currently able to submit a return.
Hi Dr Chivago
We would be grateful if you can DM us on Twitter or PM us on Facebook and include a screen shot of the Taxes page and the Making Tax Digital section within the settings.
We would also be grateful if you can provide us with the email address associated with your QuickBooks account and your community name, Dr Chivago.
In need of some help.
I'm using Desktop version of Quickbooks & attemtping to submit my quarterly VAT Return.
Recently registerd with HMRC for submiting digital return which i have been doing anyway via Quickbooks.
When trying to submit this quarters VAT Return, receiving the following error message....
"The submission of this document has failed due to departmental specific business logic in the Body tag."
Can anyone help resolve this issue???
Hello there, eshlimited.
I can see that you've shared this topic twice. Let me re-post my respond in this thread:
You'll need to make sure that you're filing details are the same with your schedule in your gateway account. This is to prevent from getting any error messages. Here's a reference for the detailed steps: How to submit a VAT return to HMRC - MTD for QuickBooks Desktop.
If the details are correct and you've authorised QuickBooks to interact with HMRC for tax filing, let's have this escalated. I would recommend reaching out to our phone team so they can help correct the error.
- Click the Help menu and choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
- Select Contact us at the bottom.
- Enter a brief description of the issue and click Continue.
- Select Talk to a Specialist.

I need help! I signed up for MTD (so i can no longer file VAT return on HMRC site), i click file online, file return and get this message;
IDispatch error # 36367
What am i doing wrong?
We presume that when you state you have signed up for MTD you have done this on the HMRC website and you have received the corresponding confirmation email from HMRC?
If you have then you will have to ensure that you have set up MTD within QuickBooks. Select the cog gear icon > accounts and settings > advanced > MTD > ensure that you have gone through the connectin procedure.
You will have to ensure that the VAT registration and the date range of the submission that HMRC are expecting are the same that is in QuickBooks.
We sincerely apologise, we incorrectly assumed that you were using the online product.
As you are using the desktop product you will have to either upgrade your account to the 2019 version or you can take out the basic online subscription, SimpleStart, and use the bridging tool to submit your VAT to HMRC.
I have attempted to submit latest VAT return but struggled at the first hurdle ! Don't know what I have done but seem t have a confirmation that HMRC have accepted my Box 1 figure before I have put the remaining figures in ???? No idea what to do ?? I clicked on refund but I think it may have added to payment which would be a gross overspend !! Help please
