Hello Sarah,

Thank you for your post! Welcome to the Community.

You can not edit or create categories in your Self Employed Quickbooks. They are based on the self assessment form for HMRC.

Hope this helps!

Thank you!

No you can not, QBSE is very limited

QBSE does not allow for any new accounts (categories) to be created
QBSE does not keep a customer listing
QBSE does not have a balance sheet so you can not enter the cost or the depreciation for a car/equipment
QBSE does not do inventory or cost of goods sold
QBSE can not do payroll
QBSE does not do any associated IRS forms, like home office deductions or depreciation

QBSE does not do sales tax either (not schedule C related but critical to a business)

Let me guide you in choosing the correct category, @Mark Finlayson-Bennett.

Choosing the right category needs assistance from your accountant. This is to ensure that your books are properly accounted for when recording transactions. If you don't have one, you can use our Find an Accountant tool to look for an accounting professional near you.

Then, to learn more about the categories available in QuickBooks Self-Employed, please visit this link: Categorise transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I've also added this helpful article to give some insights on how QBSE tracks your business income and expenses: QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview.

Feel free to post here again if you need further assistance in categorising your transactions in QuickBooks. I'm always around to help. Have a good one.
