Good day, info491,

Let me guide you through turning on the HMRC connection in QuickBooks Online.

It's possible the pop-up window is turned off, and that's why the link to the Government Gateway won't open. Make sure to enable it so you perform the task needed to complete the process.

To do so, select the browser you're using to be directed to the appropriate steps:

You can also check out our Browser Health Checkup tool to see if we can detect any potential issues with your browser.

Once done, follow the steps outlined below for your guidance:

Step 1: Enable MTD in QuickBooks

  1. Click the Gear icon at the right top.
  2. Select Account and Settings under Your Company.
  3. Go to Advanced.
  4. Click Making Tax Digital (MTD) to expand the section, then click Learn how to connect.
  5. On the Get started with digital tax page, click on Let's go.

Step 2: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC

  1. Once MTD has been enabled in QuickBooks, click Continue to sign in.
  2. Enter your HMRC credentials to sign in.
  3. Click Grant authority to continue to start the authorisation process.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. When the process has been completed, click Take a look.

I've added this link for more details with the solution above: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses. It provides a quick video tutorial and screenshots for your guidance.

If you're still unable to open the gateway page:

  1. You can visit the gov.uk website.
  2. Click Sign up your own business for Making Tax Digital for VAT.
  3. Follow on-screen prompts.

HMRC will then confirm if you can start submitting VAT Returns under MTD. The confirmation usually occurs within 24 hours. When submitting under MTD, you can continue to use your existing Government Gateway user ID and password credentials.

After that, you can then prepare and submit your returns. Feel free to read through this article for instructions and detailed steps: Submit a VAT return to HMRC - MTD for small businesses.

Keep me posted if there's anything else you need and I'll get back to you.
