I initially set up as a sole trader but needed to change to a ltd company. I have registered with Companies House and now need to change this in QB. How do I do this?

If you only have a QB Solopreneur/Sole Trader account, you'll have to upgrade to the QB Online version to choose the appropriate company type of your business, roog. Allow me to elaborate on this further.

Since QB Solopreneur/Sole Trader is designed to cater to businesses under sole proprietor individuals, I recommend upgrading your plan to QB Online. It offers more flexibility in selecting the correct company type for LTD setup.

But beforehand, please see this link to learn what happens to your data after switching to QB Online: Upgrade from QuickBooks Sole Trader to QuickBooks Online. It also provides complete guidance on upgrading your plan and the factors you need to consider in doing so.

Once you've successfully changed your QB to the Online version, follow the steps below to change your Company type. With this, I recommend seeking assistance from an accounting professional to configure your QB Online company according to the LTD setup.

Here's how to modify your Company type:

  1. Open your QB Online account.
  2. Go to the Gear icon, then the Account and settings.
  3. Select the Company tab and tick the designated Pencil icon for the Company type field.
  4. Choose the appropriate Tax form set up and modify your company's Industry.
  5. Once done, hit Save.

  6. You can also enter your Companies House Registration Number (CRN) under the Company name portion if needed. Then, Save.
  7. Once finished, click Done.

I've also attached this article: How to start a limited company. It supplies complete insight into establishing and managing an LTD company.
