Payroll warning 'tax code could not be applied due to an error - token is missing or is of the wrong data type?

Allow me to join you on this thread and provide you some information about the error that you're getting, NAW.

After our developers thoroughly worked on this, they have found out that this is an intermittent HMRC issue. The servers may not be scaled enough to handle so many requests that's why this error occurs. Usually, this will resolve itself by re-running the payroll at a different time. In the meantime, let's try performing some troubleshooting steps to help you fix the error. You can log into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account in a private window. Here are the keyboard shortcuts.

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox).
  • Control Option (Safari).

Once signed in, you can double-check if you're still getting the error. If not, go back to your default browser and clear the cache to speed up the loading process. There are times the cache becomes overwhelmed with older data which can potentially cause viewing and performance issues.

However, if you're still getting the error, I recommend reaching out to our support team to investigate the issue. They can provide you other ways on how you can send the information to HMRC.

You'll also want to switch to a different browser. Please read this article for more information: Common VAT Codes. In addition, you'll also want to get summary information on your VAT return, visit this article for your guide: VAT 100 Report.

Thanks for joining this thread, @bbernadet. Let me help you fix this error about the tax code in QuickBooks Payroll.

The error usually shows up if there's an incorrect or missing HMRC credential entered in Payrun Settings. Please follow these steps to update the login details:

  1. Select the Payroll menu and go to the Payroll Settings tab.
  2. Choose HMRC Settings, then scroll down to RTI settings.
  3. Update the HMRC user id and HMRC password
  4. Click Save.

You may also consider entering your HMRC credentials for PAYE on the HMRC portal to verify if they are accurate. If successful, check the PAYE for the employer's messages and ensure that  P6P6(B), and P0 are all set to Yes.

Once done, you can either delete and recreate the pay run to check if the error is no longer there.

If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our Payroll team.

Additionally, here's a link you can open to help you set up VAT, QuickBooks Online automatically sets up a list of common VAT codes for you.

Let me know if you have other concerns with the tax code in QuickBooks. I'll get back to this thread as soon as I can. Have a nice day.

Payroll warning 'tax code could not be applied due to an error - token is missing or is of the wrong data type?

Hi,

I did as you suggested, however, after deleting and reissuing our payslips 3 times I still have the following message:

 Tax code update errorsx

  • Tax code updates could not be applied due to an error: The token is missing or is of the wrong data type.

I have to finish now, so I am going to have to send it to HMRC as I am already late due to only now receiving our furlough pay.

Appreciate your help.

Nikki
