Quickbooks App Discontinued?

Seriously! I can't believe it! How can intuit be discontinuing the Quickbooks online APP!

The app does what it's supposed to, multiple windows etc and running more than once company at the same time.

The excuse given is that few people use the functionality !  How can that be true. All converts from Desktop will be using the APP.  It's the closest thing to the desktop.

So they are proving again that they just want to do what they want without any regard for their loyal customers. I've used quickbbooks since 1999. I'm seriously considering moving to a competitor.  This is outrageous.

Quickbooks App Discontinued?

Hi Rosco,

The QBO Windows and Mac app will be sunset for all QBO customers on April 18th, 2021. This is mostly a service discontinuation where we will no longer be pushing any updates to the app nor supporting any bugs or service requests for Mamba the QBO Windows and Mac app.

You can continue to use the QBO Windows and Mac app so long as this already installed on your computer however the app will stop updating after the 20th of April. All users will see a pop-up notifying of the sunset, and you can also access this message by clicking on the “What’s New” or “End of Service” menu items under Help.

We are taking this step as part of our prioritization process though we understand and appreciate some customers have a preference for the desktop version.

Thank you for sharing your comments on this.

Hi GeorgiaC,

So what is the alternative for customers that use the desktop app currently? I migrated from QB Desktop to QBO desktop and now I'm not sure where to go next.

Edit: I think I figured it out but I'd like confirmation. We're to use the browser version instead? If that's the case, will the mobile app be sunset as well?

Thanks,

Giggles

Hello @Giggilybits32,

Let me help share updates about the discontinuation of the QuickBooks Online app on your desktop.

Yes, the QBO desktop app will stop rolling out its update based on the date introduced above. You can more about the support and update discontinuation with this article: QuickBooks Online Mac and Windows Desktop App update.

That said, it is recommended to access your online company using any of the browsers listed in this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Online, Accountant, and QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Even if you wish to proceed using the app for mobile devices, the features you can utilize are limited only to the app interface compared to what is accessible while using a browser application.

In the same manner, here's an article you can read to learn more about the features you can use on mobile devices: Compare mobile app features.

On top of that, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: Help Articles for QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other questions, please let me know by leaving any comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.

@RoscoPC

Imho, QBO Desktop app is developed to seduce QBD users switching to QBO. We have yet to find any similar app from other competitors. They only offers mobile apps running on Android and iOS.

I am extremely disappointed that the app is being discontinued.

Whilst I appreciate that (almost) everything it does can be achieved in a web browser, having the facility to access it via a standalone app is so useful.

I am constantly having to flip between apps to enter data into QBs and, if I have to then locate the QB page on a particular tab on a web browser each time I need to enter data then I think that is the end for our company using QBs (which, after 20+ years is a real shame!).

Having a standalone app was the one thing that made QB stand apart from the other options.  There have been a few minor issues with QuickBooks online that I was willing to overlook for the convenience of having a cloud-based version of QuickBooks, but this is one step too far…

I realize Intuit couldn't care less about a company that only does $10m in annual sales, and that's sad.  This is the kiss of death for me and QBO.  Without the desktop app, I will no longer have the ability to have multiple companies open at the same time.  This is not a possibility when I have multiple companies that all do internal transferring.   Keyboard shortcuts?  Those are gone.  All of my receivable invoices on a weekly basis will now require all mouse clicks.  Good bye time saving and hello carpal tunnel.  Thanks for nothing and good riddance.

Completely agree.  There are so many things I loathe about QBO, and the app was the one saving grace.  And now they are scrapping it.

And where is their product development?  Any 'improvements' they do release tend to be useless gimmicks, whilst some basic accounting functionality is completely missing.  They really couldn't care less about their customers.

This is very bad news. The App was about the only thing that made QBO usable for me. Finding the Quickbooks tab in the many I have open (I do web development most days) is almost impossible, so having the app separate, open and ready all the time was a massive plus.

We never really wanted to use Quickbooks online, but felt like we were bounced into it by the increased pricing and awkward licensing of Quickbooks Desktop. Removing the one thing that made it tolerable is ridiculous.

You say it's not used much, but i'm not surprised since you've made it practically impossible to find on the website! It's hidden away so well, and i'm not sure it even appeared on the UK site. I initially found it, by accident, on the US site. Maybe if you actually made it clear it existed, and how useful it is, more people would use it.

Very disappointed... please re-consider.  This software is much more usable than the browser versions. Terrible news

I feel this is a massive error on inuits part, why discontinue something that makes their software easier to use? it makes no sense. Please rethink this intuit.

Tone Deaf. Removing features, increased subscription pricing, next day ACH deposits are being forced at 1% now. What are the features that will now be invested in?

There are many options including the free one.

I really don't want to lose the QBO App.
I find it much easier to use than the browser version.

What is the thinking behind this. It seems from the comments that there are a lot of us who prefer the App and I agree with a later comment that if the App was easier to find, more of you customers would use it.

Hi DebOK

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with us here. We've made the decision to retire the desktop app after careful consideration of its user rate and as part of our prioritisation process so that we can focus on working to bring new features and enhancements to the browser version.

We understand and appreciate some customers prefer the desktop version and this will remain accessible if already installed, though will no longer be updated with new features. 🙇‍♀️

That sounds good on the surface but it just doesn't hold water. The desktop App isn't really a true desktop App. It's just an Electron wrapper around a web app. So any enhancements and features the browser version gets would (for the most part) also be in the desktop app. The resources it would take to keep the app running for a healthy company the size on Intuit should be doable.

Can you tell me what these new features and enhancements will be that requires the resources from the Electron team to implement?

Exactly this!

I am not asking for any new features in the app. I am simply asking for the continued ability to get standalone access to the QuickBooks online browser functionality, via the app, but without the threat of the app suddenly stopping working hanging over me from 20th April.

This is a crazy move by Intuit.

It will continue to work, just don't ever update your OS or computer. Also, there will not be any additional security updates so I don't know how you feel about having an outdated app installed on your computer.

JulieE99

Well, that isn't an option.  I ALWAYS update my OS and do the security updates (I'm a good girl!).

I have been looking elsewhere and think I am pretty much decided that I am, after 20+ years, leaving QBs for a fresh start.

I have stuck by QB through thick and thin but their decision making lately, and their buggy software (in general, not the app!), means my patience has pretty much run out.

This is TERRIBLE!  I have been trying to use QBO through a browser for the last two days.  It keeps kicking me out and I have to log back in.  I am on fiber high-speed internet, and the browser version is much slower than the app. And sometimes it freezes when going to a new tab and I have to log-out and log back in.

It has taken me quite a while to integrate my Inventory software and online order system into QBO with specialty programming.  Now this?  What is your better option than the clunky browser option?

starflyer

The browser version is a resource hog. I have a quad-core 4ghz i7, 64gd RAM, 1TB SSD, 1Gb Fiber. The browser version slows to a crawl. It logs me out, reloads the page, etc. The app has been great for me. This is a huge mistake.

Hi there, @M_Campbell and @starflyer.

I know how the QuickBooks Online Desktop application helps in easy navigation when using the system. This coming April 20, 2021, QBO Windows and Mac app will no longer be pushing any updates. You may continue using the app, but new or existing errors will not be resolved, as we are discontinuing support. Thus, we recommend that you use a web browser to continue using QBO.

To know more about what computer and browser you need for the best QuickBooks experience, see this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Online, Accountant, and QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Let's also check if your current browser, like Google Chrome, is compatible. To do so, use the browser health checkup tool.

I'll be keeping an eye out for your response as I want to ensure that you can access all parts of your account. Have a great day.
