Memo/Description Field in VAT Detail Report Empty

I have to send HMRC a VAT DETAIL report for the last quarter.  However, this report is useless because descriptions do not show up in the Memo/Descriptions column.  Every single transaction has a description but they will not show up in the report.   Memo's show up if there is one, but not descriptions.

 

I've had support remotely take a look at my set-up and the best they can do is tell me to copy hundreds of transaction descriptions and paste them into the memo field so they show up. What a joke. 

 

Has anyone else had this issue?

Like I said in the OP a YEAR ago.  The Detail Report has No Detail.  The VAT Detail report is Fake News, no detail in it at all.  It's a fraud, its masquerading as a detail report but with no detail.   What is the point of it? 

 

I've had enough of this software.  My year end is at 1 May and thankfully  I'll be moving on from Quickbooks

Hi Jazzybear,

 

The Memo/Description column in the report is set up to display the memo field. You can use the Product/Service List report to see the description.

Go to Reports, and enter Product/Service List. Then, export both reports to Excel to create a single report.

 

To export, just click the Export icon in each report (see attached screenshot).

Thanks but I think you must misunderstand me. The product service list doesn't have any transactions within it. 

 

The VAT detail report is no good without the detail.  It lists a Vat purchase but you have no idea what the purchase was because the description is blank. Even though every transaction has a description.

The VAT Detail report in QuickBooks shows the descriptions entered in Message on statement. In line with the previous answers, you can pull up another report and customise it to show the items' descriptions of a transaction. Here's how:

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Enter Sales by Product/Service Detail in the search bar.
  3. Click on Customize
  4. Check the Tax Amount and VAT Code boxes.
  5. Click on Run report.

Export this report to Excel and make some changes to group the transactions by VAT code. For now, I've submitted feedback to our engineers. They may consider updating it in our future release.

Hi... I've had the same issue. But it's only started on the 26th of January.

 

We run VAT returns for UK & SA.
The VAT detail report, used to show the “message on statement” on the report.
From the 26th of Jan it does not.

 

On inspection of the transaction detail, prior to the 26th they used to have the “message on statement” in both the Description and the Memo.
On the 26th, the transactions show the “message on statement” in only the Description.

 

VAT detail reports only pull the Memo information.

I've test Garlyn's suggestion, but this does not show any information in the Memo/Description field for the Expenses.

 

Was something changed on the 25th/26th of January?

Has anyone else seen the same blank Memo/Description field on reports?

Something so fundamental.  ie the Detail in a VAT DETAIL Report is not showing up.

 

But don't worry  as we were told earlier  "They may consider updating it in our future release" :doh:

It used to work perfectly up until the 26th of Jan.
My HMRC Vat detail reports had the information from the bank statement.
Then my accountant said she's had to start copy and pasting the information from the Description to the Memo field. I noticed you said they same.

When I investigated when it started, I can see the change. Prior to the 26th of January, QBO automatically populated the bank statement information to the Description AND Memo fields.
VAT Detail reports pull the Memo field only.

Don't know why the column header says Description/Memo... as it's definitely only the Memo.

Found the tick box to add the bank detail. 

Here is how to find it...

 

Bank Detail settings

QuickBooks Online automatically downloads Bank Detail from the bank into QuickBooks Online. The following Bank Detail settings are turned on by default:

  • Copy bank detail to Memo: Bank detail information is copied into the Memo fields of downloaded transactions
  • Show bank detail: QuickBooks Online displays bank detail information downloaded from the bank that is slightly different from the information on your bank statement

If necessary, you can turn these settings off, if, for example, you don't want bank detail information to appear in the Memo field.

  1. On the Banking page, select the For Reviewtab.
  2. Select the Gear icon above the Action column.
  3. Clear the appropriate checkboxes under Transaction details to turn off any of the listed settings.

The settings are cleared and the information no longer appears with the transactions.

 

To show the detail, make sure the appropriate tick boxes are checked

I spent around 1.5 hours online with someone trying to sort this out and got nowhere.  As previous posters have commented the best they could do was to say copy and paste.

 

It is such a simple thing to correct (when you know how)

 

Says much about the quality of the support team that their customers know more about the software than they do!

Still waiting for the QB Developer teams to advise if they did the change without advising the support teams. If I was the change manager... I would have said this (and any changes to functionality) need to be added to the Q&A before the first person asks.

We are new to Quickbooks previously using Sage, VT and FreeAgent It was a shock to see that there was no detail on the vat report making it impossible to review easily that everything looks ok We have been entering descriptive information in the Description field assuming that would be available in reports (The Description field and not the Memo field is actually used in the General Ledger report so that the description for income and expenses can be seen but it is not shown for the Bank and Vat accounts) The logic of this is beyond me Why on earth is the Memo field displayed on the vat report and bank transactions report instead of the Description field Using the Bank Detail in the Memo field is (in my opinion) also very lacking in detail If I want to review what has been allocated to any nominal ledger account or what I am claiming/paying vat on I want to know the detail of what has been sold/paid - not who paid me or who I paid which is what the Bank detail will give me For example if I make a payment to John Smith, and that is all the Vat report is showing me, that may tell me nothing whereas if the Description field is shown and I have entered "Office chairs" I will know exactly what the payment was for ?Am I missing something here because this lack of detail on the vat report appears to me to be a fundamental flaw that cannot have gone unnoticed until now There must be a way of getting this necessary information on the Vat report Otherwise it is virtually useless Is this really the position? Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this

Currently the VAT detail report will pull through the memo in the memo/description column. As you have mentioned it will pull through one of the two and not both depending on the report there is not a way to change this. We do take on board the feedback and you can add feedback for our product engineers in the cog in the top right>feedback.

You can add in a location column to that report so that is an additional field you can pull through into that report if you are on the plus packages or it would be a case of adding that information needed into the memo.

Other users are welcome to share in response if they have any ideas around this that they have used.

At this time, there aren't any updates about the memo/description changes in the VAT Detail report. You can follow my colleague's advice to add in a location column for the meantime. You can also attempt adding the description details under the Message on Statement box for it to show on the VAT Details report.

 

That said, I'll be sure to send follow-up feedback to our Product Team regarding this concern.

We would really like a fix for this too.  We are an accountants who file a lot of clients VAT Return through QuickBooks, sending our clients a VAT Detailed report with a long list of numbers and no detail at all is completely USELESS.....

 

PLEASE FIX!!!
