How do I claim for pre-registration expenses on first VAT return?

Thanks for visiting the Community. I'm here to help you claim for the pre-registration expenses on your first VAT return in QuickBooks. 

 

Please note that you are only allowed to change the date range on the very first fling within QuickBooks Online. To do this, here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Submit Return for your first filing.
  2. Change the start date of the filing period and the end date to the end of the month before your current return start. 
  3. Select the drop-down arrow next to submit to HMRC and select Mark as filed.

 

Once you file your first return, the start date of subsequent filings will be set as the day after your previous filing as QuickBooks will automatically select the quarter dates based on the filing previously and the settings entered during VAT set up.

 

To find out which VAT codes to use for your business, visit the HMRC page or speak to your accountant.

How do I claim for pre-registration expenses on first VAT return?

Hiya, I'm new to your software. Firstly the option you have suggested doesn't appear. All I see is prepare the return. When I complete the rest of the steps and as by your description that just appears to mark it as submitted rather than submit the return.

 

I have a "take action" which is wanting me to make the first month of my VAT period as filed. I wasn't vat registered during this period but do need to claim for it.

 

I am registered for making tax digital.

Let's make sure that MTD option is fully turned on in your Account and Settings to get the Submit return option. Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Gear icon and click Account and Settings.
  2. Proceed to the Advanced tab.
  3. Click Making Tax Digital and click Learn how to connect.
  4. Follow the succeeding steps to authorise QuickBooks to submit your data.


Once done, go back to the Taxes menu and check if you can already see the option to submit it. Let me also share these additional guides for more details:

How do I claim for pre-registration expenses on first VAT return?

Thanks, I have followed your steps and QuickBooks confirms that it is already connected.

 

There is still no submit option. Just a prepare which leads to a mark as filed.

 

The take action reads:

This VAT return must be marked as filed

HMRC has already received a VAT return for the period 20/03/2020 - 19/04/2020. Just mark the return as filed to close the books.

 

Nothing has been filed for this period, My VAT registration date was 20/04/2020 which is one month into my current VAT quarter. This, I should imagine, is what the system is referring to. If I mark this as filed is this going to create an accounting issue as the software will believe I have claimed something I haven't. In addition, I want to actually claim this VAT back as this is a new start-up company and I am due a refund for the period.

 

If I click 'mark as filed' to get through the 'Take Action' am I able to go back and claim for that period or is the system going to prevent that?

Since you're unable to see the submit option and instead prompted to mark it as filed, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks support. They can check your account and help you in submitting the VAT return.

 

Just follow the steps provided by my peer above. Note that we have limited staffing and it might take a while to get you connected to our support.
