I've inserted rent as an expense, but I'm now not being offered a split button to proportion the expense.

Could you try clearing your cache and cookies, close the browser down, reload it, log back into Quickbooks and see if the option then shows to be able to split the transactions for you.
You have clicked a link to a site outside of the QuickBooks or ProFile Communities. By clicking "Continue", you will leave the community and be taken to that site instead.
