I need to move a transaction from October to July without impacting my bank reconciliation. How can I do it?

Move transaction between months

Thanks for checking in with us, info-grammconstr.

If you modify the date of the transactions, it will affect the bank reconciliation. I'd recommend consulting your accountant before making some changes. Once done, we can edit the date of the transactions from an account register. Account registers also have filtering and sorting tools that speed up your search. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon on the top menu and select Chart of accounts (Take me there).
  2. Find the account you want to review. Then, in the Action column, select Account history.
  3. Click the Filter icon, then select the filters you want to apply. You can use the Find field to search by amount, reference number, or memo.
  4. To remove a filter, select the X next to the filter name.
  5. Press Apply.

Then, edit the transactions by following the steps below:

  1. Find and select the transaction in the account register to expand the view.
  2. Make changes to the available fields.
  3. If you want to change something in the grayed-out sections, select Edit. This opens the full transaction form where you can make additional changes.
  4. When you're ready, press Save or Save and close.

To learn more about this one, check out this article: Find, review, and edit transactions in account registers in QuickBooks Online. If you need to batch edit the transactions and you are using QuickBooks Online (QBO) Accountant and QuickBooks Online Advanced, we can use the reclassify tool to save time and make the same change to multiple transactions at once. Here's how:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Click the Gear icon on the top menu, then Reclassify transactions.
  3. From the Account types dropdown menu, choose Profit and loss to see income and expense accounts. Or, select Balance sheet to see your asset, liability, and equity accounts.
  4. From the Account list, select the account with the transactions you want to change.
  5. Use the type, class, customer/supplier, and modify filters to filter the list. You can also select Accrual to see all paid and unpaid transactions, or Cash to see only paid transactions.
  6. Tap Find transactions.
  7. Select the checkbox for each transaction you want to change. If you don’t see Change location to, you may need to set up locations for your account.
  8. Click Reclassify. Then, select a new account to move the transactions to from the Change account to the dropdown, or a new class from Change class to dropdown.
  9. When you’re ready, press Apply.

You can check out this article for more details: Reclassify or move multiple transactions at once. When you're ready to reconcile again, you can find the instructions here: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
