"An application error has occurred while processing your request" on VAT tab

I have been attempting to file a VAT return for the last couple of days and keep getting the "Error occurred An application error has occurred while processing your request" error, with an infinite "QBO hourglass" - see attached.

We have tried 4 different computers, with 2 different browsers on each, along with the usual "incognito" tab, flushing caches, cookies, etc, restarting browsers and reboots.  We have filed a case, but Intuit remain silent.  I assume there are others out there with the same error, or is it just us?

Re: "An application error has occurred while processing your request" on VAT tab

I have managed to fix the issue by turning off MTD and on again:

  1. select Gear icon -> Accounts and Settings (under Your Company)  -> Advanced Tab (on the right)
  2. Look for the line "Making Tax Digital     HMRC connection     On" and select the pen icon
  3. Select the button "Learn how to Disconnect" and follow the instructions to disconnect.
  4. Select the same "Making Tax Digital" row and this time select "Learn how to connect" and follow the instructions - have your login details for HMRC to hand.

Once reconnected the problem goes away.

For Intuit "Support Specialists", the issue appears to have been caused by a previous VAT repayment which did NOT go through the "Record Refund" option against the VAT return.  It looks like an automatic rule was created from the previous+1 repayment by someone, so when the last repayment came through our bank, it was automatically added.  The VAT Return was marked as paid, yet did not have a "View Payment" option associated against it AND the refund was not listed under the "Payments" tab, unlike the previous+1 repayment.

I have since deleted the rule, and the last repayment in the bank account, and used the "Record Refund" option of the VAT Return to re-enter the refund.  Everything now looks normal.

Re: "An application error has occurred while processing your request" on VAT tab

Hello BigAl42,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I'm here to assist you with your concern about the error message when filing a VAT return.

I've checked here and found some reported issues from other users about the exact error message you received. Since you've already performed the basic troubleshooting, I recommend reaching out to our Support Specialists.

One of them will need to check your account and add you to the list of affected users if necessary. You can provide them the investigation number INV-20097 to easily track the open investigation.

Here are the steps on how you can reach them:

  1. Log into your QuickBooks account.
  2. Click Help in the upper-right corner.
  3. Click Contact us.

Please let me know if you need further help with the error, and I'll be sure to get back to you.

Re: "An application error has occurred while processing your request" on VAT tab

Hi.

As I said, we have filed a case so your "Support Specialists" are supposedly already on the issue.  Only I have already followed up since originally contacting your support and basically got a "don't call us we will call you" response.

Hence my frustration and reaching out to see if anyone else is also in this situation.  If I don't get a response by Wednesday I'll have to call HMRC and explain to them that QBO is broken (for me at least)  when it comes to MTD.

I can generate a VAT 100 (and VAT 101) report so could still file the VAT report manually, but I guess I'll wait till Wednesday to see what HMRC have to say about this.  So much for QBO being MTD compliant...
