I'm here to help ensure you're able to register the CIS deductions with HMRC, kathrynb76.

In QuickBooks Online, you'll be able to file CIS returns directly to HMRC. To do so, make sure that the information in the Accounts and Settings is correct.

Let's verify this by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab and expand the CIS settings by selecting the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) option.
  3. Verify your UTR no., Employer’s PAYE reference no., and Accounts office reference no.

Once your details have been verified:

  1. Go to Taxes from the left navigation bar, then select CIS.
  2. Select File Return for the period you wish to submit.
  3. Please verify the return and once fully satisfied, tick the box: I declare that the information on this return is correct and complete. I understand that a false declaration can result in prosecution.
  4. Choose the option Submit to HMRC.
  5. At this stage, you will be prompted to enter your HMRC credentials.
  6. Once you have entered your credentials, QuickBooks will begin connecting to HMRC.
  7. This usually takes around 60 seconds. Please remain on the screen until you receive confirmation that your return has been submitted.
  8. Once you see the message that your return has been accepted by HMRC, you can close the message and return to the main screen.

When you file the CIS return through QuickBooks, you will see the status in QuickBooks Online, but not via the HMRC portal. Likewise returns submitted via the HMRC Portal will not update the status in QuickBooks.

After the CIS submission, you'll need to account the payment you make to HMRC. Here's how:

  1. Create an expense.
  2. If you have created a supplier for HMRC, then please enter the name in the supplier field.
  3. Select the bank account from which you have paid HMRC and select the date the payment was made on.
  4. In the table section, under the Account column select the CIS Payments to HMRC account.
  5. Enter the amount you have paid HMRC.
  6. Select Save and Close.

I am struggling to find the file a CIS return button when I go to Taxes then CIS. The UTR details have been entered for both the employee and the contractor but I cannot see where to verify.

Hi @Nikki Edwards,

The steps to verify your CIS details in QuickBooks Online (QBO) were provided by my colleague @MaryLandT above.

In case you missed it, here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Account and settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Search for the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) section, then tap it.

You'll then see the fields for UTR no., Employer's PAYE reference no., and everything else related to CIS.

As for entering other sub-contractor details in your QBO company, follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the Expenses tab.
  2. Select Suppliers.
  3. On the list, click on the supplier you want to add as a sub-contractor.
  4. Tap the Edit button.
  5. Tick the Is subcontractor box.
  6. Enter their CIS details.
  7. Hit Save.

To file your CIS returns in QBO, take a look at this article for the steps: Filing CIS in QuickBooks Online. It includes the steps on how to record the CIS payment you made to HMRC.

Let me know if you have other questions about CIS in the comments below, and I'll answer them for you.

Thanks for your reply. I have done all of that already but when I go to Taxes then CIS there is no File Return button as per Quickbooks instructions.

Why isn't it showing? Even the View CIS Reports isn't working. It lets me click on it then nothing happens. I have found the reports I need but something isn't quite right as the File a Return button isn't there.

Many thanks

Nikki

Hi Nikki Do you know what type of user you are on the account, a Primary Admin, Company Admin or Regular User?

Hi Nikki, thanks for getting back to us - could you please sign in to QB via an incognito window (on Chrome, select the 3 dots in the top-right > new incognito window) to test for any cache issues preventing the CIS return from fully loading? 🧐

Hi Georgia

I have tried as you asked and still nothing. The File a Return button isn't there either.

Many thanks

I appreciate all the efforts you've exhausted just to get this working, Nikki Edwards.

At this point, I'd recommend getting in touch with our technical supports. This way, we'll be able to pull up your account in a safe session. Then, investigate why the File Return option is missing on your end. Here's how to connect with us:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Enter "Talk to a human" in the search bar.
  3. Choose Contact a human, then click the Live Chat/Call me back link.
  4. Enter "File Return option is missing." in the description box.
  5. Select Start a chat.

I'm also adding these articles to help manage your CIS return in the program:
