How to 'unfile' previous VAT returns

Hi, @steph-burrows. Let me look into this so you can unfile your previous VAT returns and enable Making Tax Digital (MTD) for your taxes.

I want you to know that you can only unfile returns in QuickBooks Online (QBO) once you're an accountant or bookkeeper. Aside from that, you can also take note of these factors:

  • You can only unfile returns that are Marked as filed or Rejected in QuickBooks.
  • Returns must be unfiled in chronological order, starting with the newest to the oldest.
  • You cannot unfile VAT returns that precede successful submissions
  • For any changes or corrections, say the VAT accounting period dates don’t match HMRC’s obligation dates or you made a mistake on the return, you’ll need to reflect the corrections in the next submission, not by changing the older filed return.

When you're ready, follow these steps to unfile them:

  1. Go to Taxes and select View Return for the period you wish to unfile.
  2. Follow the onscreen steps.

If you're not an accountant, you can invite one to help you with the process.

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Manage Users.
  2. Select Accounting firms.
  3. Enter the details, then follow the onscreen pop-ups to complete the process.

If the options provided don't work for you, you can always contact support for additional assistance in deleting your filed entries.

  1. Open this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-uk/contact.
  2. Select your product and edition.
  3. Enter your concern, then Continue.
  4. Choose a way to connect with a live agent.
