Can I connect quickbooks to MTD for VAT within the app? I missed the opportunity to sign up for MTD and the HMRC website won't allow me to sign up anymore. Thank you.

I'm registered for VAT but the signup to MTD on the website has now been removed

Welcome to the Community, jr,

I'm here to walk you through how to set up MTD for VAT in QuickBooks Online (QBO). We'd recommend you use the browser version of QuickBooks Online.

First, you have to sign up for MTD for VAT with HMRC and have a confirmation email from them when it's been completed. This may take a few days. You also need to have your MTD for VAT Government Gateway login details ready. This will be included in the confirmation email.

Note that, from 1 Nov MTD will be the way to file your VAT. With the portal closed, VAT submissions can no longer be done on the HMRC website. However, QuickBooks’ HMRC-recognised MTD VAT software is the solution.

To set QBO up for MTD, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Taxes, then select Set up MTD and follow the instructions. Or, select the Gear icon to go to your Account and Settings.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Find Making Tax Digital and select the pencil icon to show more options.
  4. Click Learn how to connect.
Note: Businesses are required to go through an authorisation process to comply with MTD for VAT. QuickBooks needs your permission to interact with HMRC on your behalf.
  5. Choose Authorise now.
  6. In the window that opens, select Continue.
  7. Select Sign in to Government Gateway.
  8. Enter your Government Gateway details for MTD for VAT.
  9. Click Give permission.
  10. Select Continue to return to QuickBooks.
