Trying to post a vat refund - being asked for a vat code

Thanks for joining the QuickBooks forum, @penny.brass,

Recording a VAT refund in QuickBooks will not require a VAT code. May I know how did you record it in QuickBooks? I need this information to check if this is an ongoing issue or a browser problem.

In the meantime, here are the steps to record the refund from the tax agency:

  1. Go to Taxes, then select VAT.
  2. Click the All returns ▼ drop-down menu, then choose the specific VAT period you need.
  3. Select the View return ▼ drop-down menu, then select Record Refund.
  4. Choose the bank account the refund has gone into.
  5. Make sure you've selected Refund under Payment Type.
  6. Enter the refund date and amount in the appropriate fields.
  7. Add a memo if needed.
  8. Hit Save.

For more information, see this article about recording a VAT refund: Record a VAT payment or refund tutorial.

If you're still asked to add a VAT code, try accessing your account in private browsing. The data on a regular browser will constantly overwrite itself and will not remove its history unless done manually. This will likely cause QuickBooks to function poorly.

While the incognito mode will not save any history, it is a great place to identify issues in the browser. Use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a new private window:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

Clearing the cache can also help resolve browser issues in QBO.

Let me know the result once you've tried the steps in your account. I want to make sure this is resolved and you're able to record the refund successfully.
