My VAT centre is saying:
"We can’t connect to HMRC right now. Let’s check a few things out to get you back on track."
Will this resolve itself? The current VAT quarter doesn't end until 31 Jan, so it's not a problem at the moment, but do I need to do anything?
I have checked the details are correct and disconnected/reconnected to MTD, per previous threads, but nothing has changed.
Thanks for letting us know that you already made sure that your account details are correct, richard96.
This error would usually show up if the credentials used to connect QBO to HMRC for MTD is not authorised to do a VAT filing for the VAT Registration number in your VAT settings. Aside from the user ID and password, this can also be caused if:
Look for the Learn More or Take Action button right below the error message and click on it. If the issue is related to an accountant and an SMB being able to submit for the same company, then this will take you through the steps to connect your own account.
Let me also share these articles about MTD and tracking VAT for more details:
Keep me posted if you have any other questions. We're always here to help.
I successfully submitted the VAT return for the quarter ending 31 Oct earlier this month, so I can't see why there would suddenly be a credentials issue. I can also see the return on their Govt Gateway account website, so that definitely worked.
This company has been using MTD for VAT since 1 May 2019 - they have always been over the threshold so they had no choice! Although the original set up was done in QB desktop rather than QBO.
I guess I will just keep an eye on it and worry about it in February when the next VAT return is due!
This message can also appear if HMRC are not sending through any open obligation requests, these are usually opened closer to the return due date so please get back to us here if this does not automatically update for you.
To cut a long story short, I raised a query with HMRC (via https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/vat-enquiries) and about a week later it corrected itself. I'm not sure if they did anything, as they never responded to the query, but I assume they corrected/reset something!
If you log in to the Govt Gateway VAT account on the website, does it show the due date of the next VAT return? On my affected company, it showed an odd message (something like 'this will be updated on the first day of the next accounting period'). Once this correctly showed the next due date, QB also cleared the error message. So I assume HMRC did something to reset/correct the due date?!
So are you still getting an error on your taxes page in Quickbooks?
Are you unable to submit your vat returns?
Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting to HMRC in the main settings in Quickbooks under the advanced section to see if that resolves it and allows you to then submit your returns?
I'm all good as far as I know - although I don't need to submit the next VAT return until March. I was just trying to help @noboots
Nothing I did in QuickBooks made any difference and I spent an hour with support going through all the options. But after I raised a query with HMRC, it got corrected (somehow!).
I get this everytime with QuickBooks.
It can take 3 weeks or more for it to simply decide to work.
Casing point - i did one on Quickbooks yesterday and one on Xero.
This morning i logged in, switched on MTD ... on Xero I made the submission right away - on QuickBooks the VAT period has changed to being an incorrect period.
Thank you Richard! Unfortunately, although I managed to connect to send my last return, on returning to my account I'd lost connection again. I've tried EVERYTHING since, getting really fed up with wasting so much time on a service I'm paying for. I haven't tried contacting HMRC - can't face wasting more time just trying to get someone to answer the phone. QBs desktop was so easy :0(
We can't connect to HMRC
This could be because you recently:
signed up for a Making Tax Digital account with HMRC
submitted a VAT return to HMRC
If so, hold tight. HMRC should restore the connection within 72 hours.
Has it been longer than 72 hours? Then contact HMRC.
Next VAT return is due end of March '21. Are you saying that I will not be able to connect to HMRC until the return is due? Last quarter I spent literally hours on the phone/live chat and finally got connected - just in time, which is very stressful! Is this what I have to do every time I file a return?
Hi noboots If your open return has an end date of March 21, we assume the 31st, then yes you'll receive that message until the day after the end date and you'll be able to file on the 1st April.
As I said further up this thread, I raised a query with HMRC (via https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/vat-enquiries) and about a week later this issue corrected itself.
To be fair, when I logged in to the govt gateway account for this company, it did say 'no return due'. When there clearly was a return due! Which does suggest this may be a HMRC problem rather than an Intuit problem?
I now have the same issue with 2 other companies that I have just submitted VAT returns for, so I'm keeping an eye on it! Would be very useful to understand the technical reasons for these error messages, as they are very disconcerting.
I have contacted HMRC via message, so hopefully they will shed some light on the subject. Interesting that the response from QBs this morning is the first time in over 7 weeks of battling with HMRC connection, that I have been told it will not be possible until a return is due. Had I known this before, it would have saved hours of my time...perhaps a note on the Taxes page would be useful to other users?
I don't think raising it with HMRC makes any difference.
I've been given this advice before ... seems to be a QuickBooks issue.
Consistently goes wrong on QuickBooks. On Xero, it just flies through within moments.
Definitely not just a coincidence
Why does the system wait until the VAT is due? It isn't even displaying the right period, which means the client cannot even see what their VAT bill is accumulating to, due to the VAT period not even being right.
It has been right, every single quarter under non MTD - how does it suddenly chop a return from 3 months to 2, then autocorrect it once the 3rd month has passed?
I'm having problems as not able to connect to HMRC. I have re-authorised 4 or 5 times over the last week, but it doesn't fix the problem. I have been submitting returns through QB since March 2019 with no problems. All details are correct - I've double checked my VAT no etc. The only issue at the moment is the current VAT period is listed as 1 Dec - 31 Dec - should be 1 Dec to 28 Feb. I will try contacting HMRC through their web chat. But any further advise would be welcome.
Hi Debbie....this is exactly the problem I had. I spent hours, probably days in total, trying to resolve the problem. I lost count of how many times I disconnected and reconnected (or tried to) with HMRC. Hours spent on live chat, remote screen share etc.etc. Then out of the blue, I spoke to someone else on live chat and I learned that I will not be able to connect with HMRC until a day or so before the return is due! This seems to be an awful gamble but we have no choice. I am told that it is to prevent an incomplete return being transmitted. I am dreading the stress of the last few days before end of period - I just hope QBO have this right and all will work as it should.
