File 1099-MISC forms using e-file service (standalone)

Learn how to file 1099-MISC forms using an e-file service.

You can submit 1099 e-file forms through Intuit to the IRS. We'll show you how below.

Review these important dates:

Follow the E-file sign up steps below.

  1. From the 1099 E-File Service page, select Start for Free.
    • Early Bird: January 1 through January 16 Intuit QuickBooks 1099 E-File Service early bird page

  2. Enter your email address, select No, I'll enter my 1099 data, and then select Continue. Intuit 1099 E-File Service Get Started page
  3. If the email address you entered does not yet have an Intuit account, you will go through the standard process of creating an Intuit Account, and then select Sign Up. Intuit 1099 E-File Service create an account page
  4. After you select Sign Up you will see this screen/ Intuit 1099 E-File Service create a company page
  5. If your email address already has an associated Intuit account, you will go through the standard sign in process and select your company form there.

Add your company details that will be included on the 1099 MISC forms.

  1. From the 1099 E-File Service main page, select Enter information. Intuit 1099 E-File Service enter information page
  2. If you select the Company Settings link, the Address will be null. Intuit 1099 E-File Service enter company information page
  3. Un-check the Same as business address checkbox to enter your Filing Address. Intuit 1099 E-File Service enter company address and filing name page
  4. Enter your company information, and then select Continue. Intuit 1099 E-File Service verify company information page

Enter Contractors

A separate 1099-MISC form is required for each of your contractors. Add information for each contractor by following these steps.

  1. Enter your 1099 data, and then select OK. Intuit 1099 E-File Service enter contractors page
  2. Enter values for the supported boxes, and then select OK. Intuit 1099 E-File Service enter contractor compensation page
  3. Verify your 1099 forms. Select Add to continue adding more contractors, or select Continue to proceed to the next step. Intuit 1099 E-File Service verify contractor information page
  4. Select the Edit link to edit or delete the forms that have not yet been submitted.

Pay for Service

  1. On the Pay for Service window, enter your credit card information, and select Approve to pay for the service.
  2. If you're a returning user, you can update your credit card information, on this Pay for Service page, by selecting Click here to change.

Download or Print Forms

  1. On the Get Your Forms page, select the Download links to save an electronic (PDF) copy of the forms to email to your contractors. You may also select Print for Contractors if you want to provide your contractors a printed copy. Select Print for Your records to have a copy for your records. Then select Continue after you make your selection(s).

You are almost done! Just a few more steps to finish E-filing your 1099-MISC forms with the IRS.

  1. Select Submit to e-file the forms you have selected with the IRS Intuit 1099 E-File submit e-file forms to IRS page (Note: The paper version of Copy A of Form 1099 is for your records only. You should not print or mail this form to the IRS.)
  2. Review your confirmation, and follow the next steps Intuit 1099 E-File service confirmation page
Note: The special characters on the payee name of the 1099 Forms you submit will automatically be removed to comply with the General Instructions for Certain Information Returns, page 8, Paper Document Reporting #10 and #11.

Here's how to add additional contractors or forms to your 1099 E-filing.

  1. Open the 1099 E-File Service, and select Start for FREE.
  2. Enter your email address, select No. I'll enter my 1099 data, and then select Continue. Intuit 1099 E-File service start for free
  3. Select a company, and then select Continue. Intuit 1099 E-File service select company page

  6. Follow the Enter Contractors steps in the "Enter company information" section for adding additional contractors.

If you manage multiple companies, you can set up an additional company in the 1099 E-File Service:

  • Create a new sign in account using a different email address. In this case, you can follow the instruction for new users; or
  • Use the same sign in account, and add a second company to your account.  Here's how to do that:
  1. Open the 1099 E-File Service, and select Start for FREE.
  2. Enter your email address, select No. I'll enter my 1099 data, and then select Continue. Intuit 1099 E-File service get started page

  4. Enter your company name, and then follow the Enter contractors step above in the Enter company information section.  If you have added several companies already, you will be asked to select which company you want to access when you sign in. Intuit 1099 E-File service select company page

If you e-filed using the Intuit 1099 E-File Service the prior tax year and plan to file for the same vendor(s) again, you can update vendor information by following these steps:

  1. Select Enter Information on the 1099 E-File main page.
  2. A list of vendors that you filed 1099s for the prior tax year will appear.
  3. Select the checkboxes for the vendors you need to file this year. Then enter the payment amount(s).
  4. Select Continue to get to the list of vendors for this year
  5. Select the Edit link next to the vendor your choose. An edit page will appear allowing you to update information for that vendor.
