A client has QB Pro 2016. As a proadvisor I don't have this version. Can I open in Premier, make changes, and the client can open back in Pro?

To clarify, they sent me a backup copy of their file and I am to make changes and send it back to them. They will not need the file while I have it and I didn't want the limitations of the accountants version, hence the backup copy. I worry that if I open the file in my Premier Accountants copy, make changes, and make a backup that they will not be able to restore the backup in Pro.

Pro and premier can open each others files, changes made when using pro, will show in premier too

Of course premier specific options will not show if you open it in pro.

The premier accountant version can be used for the year of the version or client files one year older. ie 2016 accountant can work with, and save as a 2015 or 2016 file

Hello there MBC, When you share the company file with you...

Hello there MBC,

When you share the company file with your client, you’ve got to have the same QuickBooks version.  A company file opened in a newer version can no longer be opened in an older version. However, a company file can be opened with any other edition without affecting the data in the file.

Here's a link about company file compatibility between QuickBooks Desktop versions

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you require further information.

Let's separate Version and Edition. And all of this is PC desktop, by the way.

Version = year. You would need the same Year as your client.

Edition = Pro or Premier, and the different Industry Editions of Premier. The Accountant Edition used to be part of the Premier family, by Name.

You can create a Data file in Premier and give it to a Pro user, and as long as you did not set up any "Premier-only" function, your Pro user will have no problems with that file.

"and I didn't want the limitations of the accountants version, hence the backup copy."

I think you are referring here to the Accountant's Copy, which creates a restricted file for them and a divided file for you, but you can still both keep working for nearly all functions.
