Admin password change

How do I go about changing the Admin password on a file that had no password? In other words, a few weeks ago  I received a message saying it had been more than 90 days since I last logged in using Admin and I would need to do so to keep my ability to continue accessing downloads. When I logged in it asked me to create an Admin password, which I did. I forgot to record the password and now I can't get in to 3 files. I also tried to reset the password, but the account number isn't matching, how can I reset the Admin password?

Admin password change

I got you cover, @jmartz83.

You can use the Automated Password Reset Tool to reset a new QuickBooks Desktop password. Just prepare your QuickBooks license number and make sure you're using the same business phone number, email address, and zip code in your data file.

Here's how:

  1. Download this link Automated password tool for QuickBooks Desktop
  2. Select your QuickBooks version.
  3. Fill in the QuickBooks license number and business info used when you registered QuickBooks and then hit Next.
  4. The phone number must be 10 digits with no extension at the end.  Don't use a 1 (+1) at the beginning. Then, accept the license agreement.
  5. Run the Automated Password Reset tool and then enter the token number received via email.
  6. From the QuickBooks Desktop Products drop-down, pick the same QuickBooks version.
  7. Tap Browse for Company File, and then choose the company file you want to reset the password for.
  8. Type in the correct Company File Admin User Name and enter your New Password and then Confirm New Password.
  9. Click Reset Password to complete the process.

After resetting your password, try logging in to your QuickBooks file again.

Additionally, here's a link you can browse in case you need help with other tasks in QBDT. It has topics with articles that'll guide you through the process.

Admin password change

Where can I find the license number because the product keys and serial numbers listed in my account subscription aren't working.

Admin password change

Thanks for getting back to us, @jmartz83.

There are two ways on how to find your License number and Product key/code. The first one is within your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Here's how:

  1.  Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Press the F2 key or Ctrl+1.
  3. Look for your product name, product number, and license number in the Product Information window. This image shows the top section of the Product Information window which lists your product name, release, license number, product number, and other important info.

The other way is by logging into the Customer Account Management Portal (CAMPs). Here's how:

  1. Sign in to or learn more about signing in.
  2. Search your app or subscription in the Product and Services list.
  3. Select Details.

Choosing a product or subscription lets you see more info about it, including:

  • License and product number
  • User limit
  • Payroll service key, EIN, subscription number, and other payroll subscription details
  • Product edition and version info
  • What's included in your Care plan
