Backup dir in Quickbooks Desktop Pro

Is there anywhere to specify my backup directory in Quickbooks Desktop Pro, Windows 10? (Running in Parallels on a Macbook Pro)

Every time I backup to my iCloud, which is both a directory ON my Mac and in the "Cloud", Quickbooks thinks it a "remote" computer, and I get a warning message, "The company file ________ is stored on a drive on a remote computer. Quickbooks may not be able to backup all files associated with _________ (such as custom icons, templates, etc)"

So..

1. Am I not getting a full backup?

2. Can I specify the directory and lose these error messages?

3. How do I set up my Back Up Company location and have it default to that directory?

THEN, when I choose my local hard drive to back up my Company, Quickbooks thinks it's on the same hard drive, which it is not. "You've told us to save backup copies to the same hard drive that holds your company file: We do not recommend this...."

Both my files are on my computer, AND in the cloud. That's how iCloud works.  I am safe.

How do I remove this annoying non-functional warning?

So...  ??

Hello DS57,

Having a parallel setup for QuickBooks Desktop on a Mac is possible. However, there are things that we need to consider such as the location of the company and backup files.

Yes, you are likely not to be able to backup everything as the error says. Regarding the backup location, you can set the default location upon doing the process: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Meanwhile, I'd recommend reaching out to the Mac support to ensure that the parallel setup will suit for QuickBooks.

You can also consult our Technical Support Team. They can provide additional advice or options that you can follow.

  1. Click Help at the top menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact us and then enter that you get Reminder prompts.
  3. Select Continue
  4. Choose either to Message an Agent or Talk to a Specialist

Let us know if you need anything else.

I've been using Parallels on my Mac for years, and I've encountered no problems.

Using parallels was not my question.

Here it is again:

Hi DS57,

You quite had a discussion about this matter, and I appreciate it you put the details in your reply.

The QuickBooks Desktop backup option is designed to work on local drives. You may be able to use iCloud. However, we can't guarantee you that it'll work 100% all the time, like what you've had before. For this reason, and since you're using Parallels, I would recommend reaching out to an IT personnel to check your setup.

If you have other questions about backing-up QuickBooks files, feel free to go back to this thread.

I have regularly backed up QB from the Parallel program running Windows 10 to iCloud as I use a MacBook Pro to run the program.   It usually works well, but several times it says it either cannot find the file or the file is damaged.

Where should the QB backup files be kept?   On the Windows side or the Mac side?    I don't mind storing my files where the program exists as I also back up onto a flash drive and my computer is very stable.   If any data is lost, it's only a few days at most.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, inkyx. When you are backing up your company file, it is up to your judgment to save the file where you prefer. However, if you need to find or restore your company file, simply locate the .qbb extension at the end of the file name. You can refer to these articles about backing up your company file and restoring it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know by commenting below. I will be here. I hope you enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

Your answer, SashaMC, has really no bearing on this thread.  Please read the thread first, then reply accordingly!!!!

To reply to the previous post as to WHERE to backup to?

I put my backup on the iCloud directory, (on my Mac, obviously), which saves it "in the cloud" so I'll never lose it.

Hope that helps.
