Chart of accounts migration

I started a new QB online in the hopes of starting fresh.  The old Chart of Accounts doesn't work well.  Sadly, the one thing that did migrate from desktop to online was the chart of accounts.  How can I clear it out and start fresh?  There is no actual data to worry about - we are starting fresh

Chart of accounts migration

A warm welcome to the Community, KAT1607.

To clear out your chart of accounts, you can make the accounts inactive and create a new one to start fresh.

You can follow the steps below to make them inactive:

  1. Click Accounting in the left panel and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. On the account list, choose the account you want to clear out.
  3. In the Action drop-down, select Make inactive.
  4. Hit Yes.

Here are some things to consider when deleting an account in QuickBooks Online (QBO):

  • The account will be made inactive in the QBO.
  • If the account has a non-zero balance, the system will make an adjusting transaction.
  • Although you can make a deleted account active again, you may need to make corrections to journal entries and balances.

Once done, you can scan through the following write-up to re-create the account: Add an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

For more details about how the chart of accounts works, check this out: Manage default and special accounts in your chart of accounts. This will provide you details on what are the accounts that can't be deleted as well as the steps on how to merge them in QuickBooks.
