When you upgrade from QB Enterprise version 19 to 20, do you need to keep the files from the old version or can you uninstall them??

Glad to see you in the Community, Intercc.

I’m happy to know you’re considering upgrading your QuickBooks Enterprise 2019 to the 2020 version.

You have the option to either keep the files or uninstall them. Before changing your QuickBooks version, I recommend creating a backup of the company file to prevent accidental loss.

In regard to uninstalling the files, are you referring to removing QuickBooks Enterprise 2019 (company files) and restore it to QBES 2020? If yes, you’ll no longer have to do that to save time.

During the upgrade process, you’ll be prompted if you want to want to keep your current version. Make sure to mark the box for Keep old version on my computer to automatically create an updated version of the company file.

For more insights, the following article contains steps on how to upgrade your QuickBooks to a new version and instructions to use the easy upgrade tool: Upgrade to newer versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Here's a guide that lists all new features in QuickBooks 2020. It provides an overview of how each one can help your business thrive: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2020.

This is the exact same response i received earlier which does not answer my question.  Am i supposed to keep the old version on the computer or not? That is the question.

You can do both depending on your preference, @Intercc.

Before doing so, it's best to save a backup copy of your company files to prevent unexpected data loss along the process as also mentioned by my peer above. This way, you can restore them anytime.

Once ready, you can read through this article for the detailed steps on how to upgrade your QuickBooks version: How to upgrade to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Also, I'll be adding this great resource just in case you encounter company file issues in the future: Fix company file issues.
