How do I change/update the account number for a credit card account?

My credit card has been replaced so the account number has changed. I want to retain all historical data for the CC and just want to update the credit card number. Nothing I have tried is working. I disable web connect and reconnected but the old account number remains and therefore I am unable to import downloaded transactions.

Hi there brigbard,

I'm here to share how you can update the credit card account number in QuickBooks.

Since the credit card number is part of the information QuickBooks requires to connect to the bank, you'll have to get in touch with your bank to cancel the online services tied to it. Please note any fees for this service will continue until it's completely cancelled.

The online services for the old credit card number might still be active, and that's why the old number was retained when you reconnected the account. Then, you're able to disconnect the credit card account from QuickBooks.

Here's how you can do this:

  1. Click the List menu.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Select the credit card account and click the pencil icon to edit it.
  4. Click the Online Settings button.
  5. Select Not enabled from the Download Transactions dropdown menu.
  6. Click OK.

The downloaded data from the old credit card account will stay hidden until you add the service again.

To set up the online services for the new credit card number, here are the steps:

  1. Click the Banking menu.
  2. Select Bank Feeds.
  3. Select Set Up Bank Feed for an Account.
  4. Follow the on-screens instruction to import the transactions via WebConnect.

Please keep me posted on how things go with this. I'm here anytime you need further help with the online bank services in QuickBooks Desktop.

I have the same situation with having to update a card number.  I'm using QB for Mac.  Under the Banking menu there is no Bank Feeds option.   Instead, I've tried following the QB directions for setting up a new account but run into the request to "download statement" in the "downloaded transactions" window.  After I download the statement for the new account from the bank, QB will not let me enter it in the window they say I'm supposed to enter it into!  VERY FRUSTRATING.  What am I missing here?

BTW, none of the options described above appear in my version of QuickBooks. Have you updated the interface and not bothered to update the help information?

I'm the online version. It also seems absurd to have to close and reopen, hence losing all the previous information, which is actually the same account.

Any updates on this problem?

Re: How do I change/update the account number for a credit card account?

In the online version, ask QB to update all bank accounts.  After that, in the banking tab, when you switch to the account that is not connecting properly (this happens for instance when the cc number changes), you will see a "requires attention" message and a "check connection" link.

When you click on "check connection", QB should show you all the accounts he can see under your login at the bank.  In my case, I checked which one had the new cc number and clicked on "reconnect" on that one.

That solved the issue.

Same for me. Desktop Pro 2018, and starting with "pencil icon..." I don't have any of the options available.

What is the process for updating the account number in desktop pro 2018?

I appreciate you for joining this thread, counter_in7ui7ive.

I'd be glad to guide you through the whole process of updating your account number in QuicKBooks Desktop.

When changing the account number for your bank feeds in QuickBooks Desktop, you'll have to deactivate the account first. I'll show you how to do it below:

  1. Go to the Lists menu.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Right-click the account that needs to be deactivated then select Edit Account.
  4. Go to the Bank Feed Settings tab.
  5. Select Deactivate all online services.
  6. Select OK then Save & Close.

Now, you can change the banking information by following the steps provided below:

  1. Click Lists at the top.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Right-click your bank account, and then choose Edit Account.
  4. Change your account number.
  5. Click Save and Close.

Once done, you can set up the bank feeds again. Let me walk you through how to do it:

  1. Go to Banking menu.
  2. Select Bank Feeds.
  3. Click Set Up Bank Feeds for an Account.
  4. In the Enter your Bank’s name field, enter the name of your bank.
  5. Follow the on-screens instruction to import the transactions via Web Connect/Direct Connect.
  6. On the Link your Accounts screen, choose which bank account/s to add to QuickBooks.

Here's an article that outlines a detailed steps on how to set up your bank feeds in QuickBooks Desktop: Set up account for Bank Feeds.

That should do it. If you need more help with this, just let me know as I'm always here to help.
