My credit card has been replaced so the account number has changed. I want to retain all historical data for the CC and just want to update the credit card number. Nothing I have tried is working. I disable web connect and reconnected but the old account number remains and therefore I am unable to import downloaded transactions.
Hi there brigbard,
I'm here to share how you can update the credit card account number in QuickBooks.
Since the credit card number is part of the information QuickBooks requires to connect to the bank, you'll have to get in touch with your bank to cancel the online services tied to it. Please note any fees for this service will continue until it's completely cancelled.
The online services for the old credit card number might still be active, and that's why the old number was retained when you reconnected the account. Then, you're able to disconnect the credit card account from QuickBooks.
Here's how you can do this:
The downloaded data from the old credit card account will stay hidden until you add the service again.
To set up the online services for the new credit card number, here are the steps:
Please keep me posted on how things go with this. I'm here anytime you need further help with the online bank services in QuickBooks Desktop.
I'm the online version. It also seems absurd to have to close and reopen, hence losing all the previous information, which is actually the same account.
Any updates on this problem?
In the online version, ask QB to update all bank accounts. After that, in the banking tab, when you switch to the account that is not connecting properly (this happens for instance when the cc number changes), you will see a "requires attention" message and a "check connection" link.
When you click on "check connection", QB should show you all the accounts he can see under your login at the bank. In my case, I checked which one had the new cc number and clicked on "reconnect" on that one.
That solved the issue.

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps so you can change the account numbers of your account.
Firstly, you'll have to disconnect your online services before changing any of your account information. Thus, you'll have to your bank's support so someone can help you cancel the online services tied to it.
Once done, you can go back to QuickBooks and disconnect your account for online services. To do so:
After doing so, you can now set up your account with the correct account number for online services. Let me show you how:

Hi there, @p chappell,
Thanks for providing an in-depth information about what's going on with your Bank Feed account. Let's get this fixed so you're able to resume our business processing in the program.
First, if your Visa Business Credit Card account is previously connected for online banking and can't reconnect it to download transactions, deactivate the online services. This way we can establish a new connection and refresh the data in QuickBooks.
Follow the steps below:
Next, create a new account using the same details and description as the account you want to reconnect. Here's how:
To resume your online banking services, connect the merged account by following the steps in this article: Set up the merged account for Bank Feeds.
Once reconnected, QuickBooks will download the maximum data available from your bank. If there are missing data, you may import them through WebConnect files. Refer to this link to learn more about manually importing bank files: Download Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.
If you have any additional questions or need further assistance with this topic, let me know in the comment. I'll be more than happy to help whenever you need one. Have a nice day!
So in part 1 of your solution you didn't actually mention whether you need to deactivate the old account. When I follow your instructions explicitly it throws an error saying an account with the same name already exists. If I try to disable the old account first it tells me it is going to create a closing transaction. Someone at QB must know the proper and complete way of accomplishing this. Pleas help!
I'm here to help you in updating your credit card account, gemada.
Let's sort things out first before we disconnect and connect. First let's make sure we've matched or deleted all of the downloaded transactions for the old account. We won’t let you make changes if there are still pending transactions. Once done, we can disconnect it and set up the new the one.
During the process of connecting the account again, we have the option to use the same register or create a new one. Just find the QuickBooks account we want to link the credit card account to.
If you need further help, you can reach out to us so we can fix errors that you're prompted to.
Feel free to get back to me. My colleagues and I are here to assist you. Take care!
Would you please post instructions for QBO as well?
To be clear, all we need to do is update the bank feed with the new number. Anything requiring us to delete transactions or deactivate anything is dumb and will create weeks of work.
So, how do we do it?
You've come to the right place, @danjonwig.
You can update your credit card information by manually updating your bank connection in QuickBooks with the new number.
You can refer to this article for more insights about updating your connected bank account: How to manually update bank accounts.

thanks for help. I get below message when trying to connect to CC feed( see screen shot):
Complete some security steps for HSBC Bank (UK) - Business Banki-1,
Then we’ll get your latest transactions. (185)
Complete secure connection .
On talking to chat last night they suggested that it needs more authentication i.e. OTP
Hsbc only uses a keypad that generates number- this i what use for code when asked-
it works fine for Bank Account and not CC account.
I have tried all the usual suspects re-connecting-disconnecting, clearing cache etc and nothing has worked since 27th January-when my card number was changed- it does see the new card account when i ask to connect under:
HSBC other accounts
Be great to get a definitive answer to this problem! As Quickbooks have told me on may occasions,
that open banking issues on security are now sorted with HSBC
Welcome to the Community, @p chappell.
I can share some information about using Bank Feeds in QuickBooks.
You usually encounter the Error 185 message if your financial institution requires more information during the connection process. If your credit card account has Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enabled, the added security might be the cause of the problem.
I suggest logging into your online banking and check if you can successfully log in. You can also verify with your bank if they provide OTP for connecting the account with QuickBooks.
If yes, please follow these steps:
If the problem persists, It would be best to continue working with our QuickBooks Support Team. Since this is a public forum, we have limited resources, and checking accounts are prohibited.
In case you need the steps, here's how:
I've also attached some links below for your reference about the bank errors, as well as how to choose the right account:

I think the problem is HSBC don't require a OTP, and it appears Quickbooks require this for Credit Card now.
Under "add account " it is seeing the new CC account ok. My log-in details are the same for HSBC as 3 months ago. Hsbc have a two-step Password and key pad code number which is the same for my Business account and Credit card as before. I contacted them today to check and the confirmed there is no OTP.
A shame this cant be fixed , but i have had a lot of replies and thanks all for advice.
It may be Quickbooks and HSBC have to sort it!
Thank you for the help. However, after I complete these steps, and provide my login information again (which, to be clear, was never a problem - it is logging-in to the bank site just fine, as evidenced by the fact that the other 5 accounts are connected with no issues), your website just continues to give the error "We can't find this account at your bank".
I think you may have been answering someone else's question, rather than mine? My issue isn't that I'm not logged-in (I am, no problem!), it's that because of fraud, the credit card number changed, and therefore so did the account number. I just need to find the place in QBO where I say "yes, the account you used to connect to is gone, but just use this one instead, and treat them as if there are all the same account". Where's that button?
Thanks for providing more information about your concern, @danjonwig.
Allow me to chime in and share with you some insights on how you can successfully connect to your bank using your new account in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
First, since there are changes in the account number, you'll have to disconnect the current bank connection then reconnect it using the new account.
I can walk you through the steps on how to disconnect your current bank connection. But before we proceed with the process, ensure to add and match all the pending transactions in the Banking page. This is because disconnecting the automatic online banking updates will delete any transactions in the For Review tab. Once done, follow the steps below to disconnect your recent bank account:
Then, we can now proceed with connecting your new bank account. Please refer to this article for the steps on how to achieve this: How can I connect my bank account in QBO?.
I also want to make sure you can get back to working order always, so I'll be adding this article about the fixes if in case you encounter any bank errors: What to do if I encounter a bank error in QBO?.
Please let me know if you hit any bumps along the way with your online banking. I'd be glad to assist you further. Best regards, @danjonwig.
Good news future reader! All of these insanely complex steps are not required.
if you look for the error message I mentioned, there is a hidden button labeled “reconnect”. You can see it if you reduce your font size as small as possible, so it fits in the box of the message without falling off the bottom. Once you click that button, it shows you a menu that does exactly what the obvious thing would be: it lists all the accounts from the bank feed not linked to a QBO account, you pick one, then it reconnects it.
others who replied with elaborate fixes: thank you! But I’d suggest deleting your posts before others see them and accidentally do hours of work when only seconds is required.
