How to change Business/Industry Type in QB Desktop 2019

I just set up a new company in QB Desktop 2019 and want to change the type so that the defaulted Chart of Accounts list coincides with the correct type of business. For example; Construction was selected and they need it changed to a Real Estate Company etc. Any advice or instructions would be much appreciated.

How to change Business/Industry Type in QB Desktop 2019

Hi @Skizzle,

Welcome to the Community. I'm here to share some information about setting up the industry type in QuickBooks Desktop.

The default accounts will depend on the industry type selected during the interview process of your company file (see screenshot below). Once complete, you can no longer replace them automatically in the system.

I recommend you create a new one with the correct type to fix the issue. You can click the File tab at the top menu bar and select the New Company option.

You can also create a backup copy to secure the details of your existing company files. In case you need the steps, I suggest visiting this article: Restore a backup of your company file.

For additional reference, you can use the following link to learn how to make accounts inactive in QuickBooks: Delete an account on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Fill me in if you have more questions about the chart of accounts in QuickBooks. I'm always here to help. Take care always.
