I am trying to up grade Quick books to 2020 from 2019 . I just purchased 2020 yesterday.

If you purchased directly from intuit log into your intuit account ( and download the setup.exe for your purchased product. Use advanced install if you wish to keep 2019 installed side by side (I recommend) after install you will have to find and open each of your companies and will be prompted to save a backup. I always save backups before upgrade so I can always go back.

Lastly remove any quickstart icon for QB from your task bar as it will be for 2019. Right click on icon for 2020 on your desktop and choose save to task bar.

You will get to same point by accessing upgrade option from Help menu dropdown and tell it you already purchased - which should then prompt your login to your account

Hi there, snitsky39.

Since you already have 2020 purchased, you're already well on your way to upgrading. All you'll need to do is install the 2020 program on your computer with the new license and product details.

As mentioned by john-pero, you'll need to create back up of your company file first before opening it in a new version of QuickBooks so you can always go back to your previous data. Once you convert your company file from QuickBooks 2019 to QuickBooks 2020, you can no longer read or use that file in your 2019 software.

After creating a back up file, please follow the steps below on how to upgrade your company file to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

First, install QuickBooks 2020.

Here's how:

1. Sign in to Windows as an admin user.

2. If you haven't already, download your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

3. Follow the steps to install your new version.

Once done, you can now upgrade your company file, please follow these steps.

1. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

2. Choose Open or Restore Company if you don't have a company file open. You can also go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.

3. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore a backup copy and then Local backup.

4. Browse your computer for your company file. You wrote down the file location in Step 1. Select it and then select Open.
