I can't upload document to my Accountant using the Shared Documents tab. I have a folder icon with an exclamation mark displayed on the screen.

I'm here to help ensure you're able to upload and share your documents with your accountant in QuickBooks Online, userdelightpropertym.

You'll want to make sure the documents meet the specific requirements. Here are the file types you can upload:

  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • DOC
  • XLSX
  • CSV
  • TIFF
  • GIF
  • XML

If the file you're trying to upload meets the requirements above, we can do some of the basic troubleshooting steps by accessing your account in a private window. Here's how:

  • Google Chrome: Press CTRL + Shift + N.
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Press CTRL + Shift + P.

Once signed, go back to your Shared Documents page and upload the file from there. If it rectifies the issue, go back to your main browser and clear its cache to remove the browser's history. You may also try accessing your account using another supported browser.

I also encourage reading this guide to help manage and track client requests, projects, and tasks.

Feel free to leave a comment below if I can be of any other assistance. Have a pleasant day ahead.

I am having the same problem.  I tried the above mentioned suggestions and it did not fix the problem.  I cannot click the area to "get started" nor can I drag and drop.  I also tried another web browser.  Nothing helps.

I am having the same problem - I can't upload documents to share with my accountant.  All I see is a grey folder with an exclamation point which doesn't allow me to click on it.  I spent over 1 hour on the phone with Quickbooks customer service and the agent wasn't able to help me.  She said she would have someone contact me but it's been 3 days and no one has called me.  I need to use this feature otherwise what's the point in having Quickbooks!  So frustrated not receiving help or answers!

I know that this hasn't been easy for you, azizascloset.

You'll want to perform the troubleshooting steps provided by my colleague, Rose-A, to isolate the issue. It's possible that the accumulated cache and cookies in the browser is preventing you from uploading the files.

If the same thing happens, I'd recommend getting in touch with our technical support. This way, we'll be able to further investigate this issue and check the status of your previous case. here's how to connect with us:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Select Talk to a human.
  3. Enter "Talk to a human" again in the search bar.
  4. Choose I still need a human, then click Contact us.
  5. Select Get a callback or Send a message to start a conversation.

Additionally, here's an article that will help attach documents to your transactions for a more organized record-keeping: Attachments in QuickBooks Online.

I'm just a comment away if you have other concerns or additional questions. Have a good one.

I've been chatting for over 2 hours today and have not gotten a resolution to this same problem. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for tagging along in this thread, @drrobertmiller.

To clarify, are you receiving any error messages when trying to upload them? Have you tried accessing your account using the incognito or private mode? Otherwise, let’s perform some troubleshooting steps so you can upload your file.

Here are the shortcut keys:

  • For Google Chrome, press Ctrl+ Shift + N.
  • For Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Safari, press Command + Shift + N.

Once you’ve signed it, let’s try to drop and drag your files to the Shared Documents tab. If it works, you’ll need to clear your browser’s cache. This enhances the overall performance of the browser and the application.

You’ll also want to check if the attachments match the requirements. The following are the file types that can be attached to customer and vendor profiles and transactions:

  • PDF
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • DOC
  • XLSX
  • CSV
  • TIFF
  • GIF
  • XML

If you're using the correct file type and you're still having issues with uploading, then I recommend contacting our Customer Support Team. They can pull up your account in a secure environment and further assist you with this issue. Please take note of our support hours, so we can address your concerns on time.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Tap the Contact Us button.
  3. Give a brief description of the issue and hit Let's talk
  4. Scroll down and select to Get a callback

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm always around to lend a hand. Take care.

No PDFs? That makes no sense. What documents are sent in JPG form?!

Beforehand, this isn't the kind of customer service I want you to feel. I'm here to shed some light on file attachments in QuickBooks Online.

As provided by my peer above, PDF is included in the file types that can be attached to customer or vendor profiles and transactions, as well as the JPEG or JPG form, which is a standard digital image format. That said, images can be attached when you use this format.

For more insights about attachments in QBO, please refer to this article: Add or delete attachments in QuickBooks Online.

For future reference, you can review this guide about special characters for attachments: Learn more about special characters in QuickBooks Online.

I'm always here to help you whenever you need more assistance with QBO-related concerns. Keep me in the loop by tagging me in your reply. Have a good one!
