I have a MAJOR sales tax report issue EVERY month since April 2020. Need help, sales tax rates are auto programmed wrong, it won't let me correct. QB is on my last nerve.

I used to be able to program the sales tax rate myself, now, QB does it and it's not the correct rate for the county the job is located at. I can not delete old rates, only add and now there are too many different rates. When doing my sales tax report some sales are totally missing from it.

Hi there, @aclean.

I've got some details to share about automated sales tax.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) Automated Sales Tax feature uses tax tables provided by government agencies to calculate sales tax. Some factors can affect the calculation, these are:

  • The state where you have registered to collect sales tax.
  • The physical address of your business.
  • The physical address on the sales receipt or invoice.
  • The product mapping you have associated with the products or services you are selling.
  • The exemption status of your customer.

To make sure all taxable sales calculated correctly, verify the shipping address and ZIP code.

For more insight into this feature and steps to see how the rate is being calculated, check this link:

You can also take a look at this article for additional information about sales tax calculation, check out this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

On the other hand, if you'd want to override the sales tax, so it'll change the rate created on a sales transaction. Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. In the left menu, click the +New button.
  2. Choose Invoice or Sales Receipt.
  3. Tap See the math.
  4. Hit Override this amount.
  5. Enter the sales tax rate and amount.
  6. Click Close, then Save and close.

Should you have any questions about sales tax, or anything QuickBooks related, I'm just a post away. Hope you have a good day.

Explore this AST Filing & Reporting app as a workaround.

My client has an issue with the sales tax filing itself. When he clicks on the sales tax tab amd selects a month the report is showing a negative amount in nontaxable sales. The liability report is correct just not the actual sales tax report.

Thanks for posting here, @Cb49,

Not being able to file taxes in the program can be frustrating, but I'm here to help you resolve it. If there is an unusual issue with the sales tax filing on the regular browser, try to log in using a private browser.

As the cache stores your data, it also stacks up overtime. This is because the browser will constantly overwrite itself without deleting the old stuff, causing the program to slow down. The private window will not save any history making it a good place to identify browser problems.

To open a private browser, use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a private window:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

If it shows the data correctly, clear the browser's cache.

However, if it doesn't fix the problem, I recommend getting in touch with our Support Team this time. This way we can get this issue reported to our engineers for a fix.

Follow these steps to contact our support:

  1. Open a browser in your iPad and paste this link: http://qbo.intuit.com/.
  2. Go to the Help menu in QuickBooks, then choose the Search tab.
  3. At the bottom click on Contact us.
  4. Enter the keyword Account Management and Billing in the What can we help you with? box.
  5. On the next screen, scroll down to How would you like to connect with us section.
  6. Choose Chat with us to initiate a discussion with a live agent.
  7. Enter you account contact information then press Get a chat.

Kindly post an update here. I'll be right here to help you with your sales tax processing. Just comment down below to connect with me again. Have a nice day!
