Hello, @daleandana

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. We can create a back up file from your laptop and restore it to your second computer. Though, every-time you switch to different station, you have to create a back up so you'll be able to view and use the current file. Let me walk you through how:  Before you start, make sure you install QuickBooks Desktop on the new computer.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode
  2. Click File choose Back Up Company then select Create Local Backup
  3. Pop up window will appear, and choose Local backup
  4. In the Local Backup Only section, select Browse and click where you want to save your backup company file.
  5. Click OK
  6. Follow the on screen message and tap OK
  7. Press Save it now and Next

QuickBooks creates a single backup company file. When it's done, you get a confirmation message.

To restore your back up file to the second computer. You can refer to this article for steps: Restore a backup of your company file.

You can read this article for reference: Move your company files to another computer.

Please get back to me if you have further questions about moving data to other computer. I'm here to lend a hand. Have a great day!

Clarifying the above information:

You are free to install a full copy of the software onto a second computer. Do so by logging in to your Intuit account and download from there.

Save the backup to removable media, preferrable a removable hard drive rather than a thumb drive.

Restore on the second location from the removable hard drive OR if you used a thumb drive copy the hbackup onto the second computer desktop or C drive prior to restoring. Restoring directly from a thumb drive can cause complications while backing up to it is usually fine.

Hello there, @laesti61985.

I appreciate your time in joining this thread and for sharing your concern. Allow me to jump in for a moment and help make sure that you can turn your payroll subscription into QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Just to make sure that I'm on the same page, did you encounter any error messages while turning on your payroll subscription? Any additional information will be much appreciated.

In the meantime, as an initial troubleshooting step, let's enter the service key to activate your payroll subscription. Let me show you how.

  1. Go to the Employees menu.
  2. Choose My Payroll Service, then Manage Service Key.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Enter the 16-digit number, then click Next.
  5. confirmation message appears.
  6. Select Finish.

Once done, downloads the latest tax table to verify your payroll subscription.

I'm including some related articles to help you:

Additionally, here's an article that'll further guide you on the basic workflows and tasks you can do using QBDT: Working with QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise. It includes topics about getting started with the system, moving company files, and running your business.
