It's nice to have you here in the Community, bo7.

I'm here to assist you on how to see more companies in QuickBooks Desktop. You'll have to open all the companies. QBDT can display up to 20 companies on your list. I'd be glad to walk you through the process:

  1. From the File menu, select the Open Previous Company.
  2. Select on Set Number of Previous Companies at the bottom of the menu.
  3. Enter the no. of the desired company into the Number of Previous Companies field.
  4. Click on OK to apply the changes and return to the main window.

You can also check out the company file is missing or cannot be found for your reference.

I'll be right here if you have any other concerns.

Welcome back to the Community, bo7.

May I know if you access QuickBooks over a network or it’s saved locally on the same computer? If the desktop program is linked to a network, ping the server to check the connection.

When performing this task, make sure it’s done on the client’s workstation. To begin, check the name of your server computer.

Here’s how:

  1. Press the Windows logo+R on your keyboard.
  2. Another window will open.
  3. From there, key in CMD and click OK.
  4. Enter ipconfig /all and then press Enter.
  5. Take note of the Host Name (servername).
  6. Next, input ping [name of your server] then hit Enter.
  7. After following these steps, you’ll see a reply for each packet.
  • Reply means the computer is connected to your network.
  • Packet loss or a slow reply indicates the network should be checked by an IT professional.

If you’re already connected to the network, look for the company files by doing a wildcard search. For detailed instructions, check out this article and perform Solution 2: Search for all company files: Company file is missing or cannot be found.

However, if your QuickBooks is saved on the same computer, I suggest following the steps provided in the article above and go directly to this section: If you are accessing your QuickBooks file saved locally on the same computer.

Let me know if you need further assistance while working on the product. I’ll be right here ready to help and make sure you’re taken care of. Have a good one.

Thank you for getting back here in Community @bo7.

To set the number of previously opened company files, you must be logged on either one of them.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Pro 2020.
  2. Choose Open or restore an existing company.
  3. Choose Open a company file and click Next.
  4. Find your company file.
  5. Click Open.

Once you're in, redo the steps to set the number of companies, here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Open Previous Company.
  2. Choose Set Number of Previous Companies.
  3. Input the no. of the desired company.
  4. Click OK to implement the adjustments and return to the main window.

If you happen to have a back up copy and wish to open it, you can refer to this article: Restore a backup of your company file.

Please don't hesitate to comment below if you have any clarification. I'd be glad to help you out. Have a great day!
