I'm having trouble exporting from QB payroll to QB desktop for Mac. Net pay numbers are exporting with payee as 'QUICKBOOKS' but no employee names or withholding splits.

I believe the net pay numbers that are showing are actually not coming from the export, rather being pulled from my bank ledger when I sync bank with QB Desktop for Mac. I double checked withholding account names and they are word for word match. (that was one suggestion). Perhaps it's not exporting at all. SOLUTION NEEDED - Do I delete all payroll in my ledger and go back and add one by one, manually adding all the splits? Or can I delete all the payroll on ledger in QB desktop and Re-Export payroll? Can't find any way to 're-export' in QB payroll Online. Thanks!

Welcome to the Community forum, uberzoot.

Let me address your concern about exporting payroll data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac.

When exporting your data to QBDT for Mac, you'll need to review your payroll settings and ensure the account linked to your employee is correct since the account type in the extracted file will depend on the employee's set-up in QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP).

Here's how:

  1. On your QBOP account, go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Payroll settings.
  3. Go to the Preferences section.
  4. Click the Accounting link.

From there, make the necessary changes to the linked accounts. Then, ensure it'll match with the account type you have in QBDT for Mac. You can do so by editing the IIF file manually.

You can take a look at this resource for a guide: Payroll accounting preferences.

To export your payroll transactions via IIF directly in your QBOP account, follow the below steps:

  1. On your QBOP account, go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Go to Payroll Preferences.
  3. Click the edit (Pencil) icon.
  4. Select QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
  5. Choose Continue.
  6. Click Done.

After that, once the file is verified, import the payroll data into your QBDT for Mac. Let me show you how:

  1. From QuickBooks Mac, click File.
  2. Select Import.
  3. Choose From IIF Files.
  4. Locate the IIF file and import it.
  5. The payroll information will then appear in QuickBooks Mac.

To learn about the IIF import and export limitations, I suggest visiting this article: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

I'm having trouble exporting from QB payroll to QB desktop for Mac. Net pay numbers are exporting with payee as 'QUICKBOOKS' but no employee names or withholding splits.

Thank you so much for the detailed info.

My settings (liabilites/expense match chart of accounts) seem to be correct, however when importing from Quickbooks Mac, I cannot find where the .iff files are being downloaded.  There are no more transactions to export, so when I export from QBOP it says all have been exported.  I've unselected and reselected Quickbooks for Mac in export preferences, but it doesn't seem to download anything.  Is there a default folder .iff's are sent to?  Or could it be my Mac blocking a download? There is no error or message though.

Thanks

I have more steps we can try, @uberzoot.

You'll want to perform the browser troubleshooting steps. Open QBO using the incognito mode or a private browser. This browsing doesn’t store data and will help the page load without issues from temporary data.

Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome).
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox).
  • Press Command + Shift + N (Safari).

Make sure to turn off the pop-up blocker before exporting your data. Just click Pop-ups blocked icon at the upper right most of your browser.

Then, follow the above steps provided by my peer @MirriamM to export the .iif file.

I am having the same issue ever since Intuit online payroll changed to quickbooks online payroll. Cannot export my payroll to desktop and having to manual enter them. Did these instructions work for you??
