Imported bank transaction not matching to a Bill

When we import bank data there's an option of matching transactions to bills. I know that this matching is done by the amount. It will be only successful if the sums of a bill and a transaction are the same. But is there an option to match by other fields, for example the Description field?
According to the answer here only a bill with the same amount could be matched to a transaction. I wonder if anything changed since then (2020)

P.S. Maybe there's a way to automate this process in a way that some bank transaction could be matched to a bill based on various fields

Imported bank transaction not matching to a Bill

Hi David,

It’s great to have you here in the community! This is an excellent question, and I truly appreciate your interest in optimizing your bookkeeping. I understand you're looking for ways to match transactions using fields beyond just the amount and date, like the description, to help streamline your workflow.

You can utilize Bank Rules in QuickBooks Online (QBO) to simplify the process of categorizing transactions. These rules are particularly beneficial for recurring expenses, payments to specific vendors, or transactions that follow predictable patterns, such as monthly subscriptions, utility bills, or regular supplier payments. By setting up these rules, you can ensure that transactions are accurately classified when they are imported into the system.

Here's how:

  1. Go to My apps and select Rules.
  2. Click New rule. Note: Select Go to rules if you are adding for the first time.
  3. Enter a name in the What do you want to call this rule? field.
  4. From the Apply this to transactions that are dropdown, select Money in or Money out, and then the bank account.
  5. From the in ▼ dropdown, select a bank account, or select All bank accounts.
  6. Set the rule conditions. You can set a single rule with up to 5 conditions. Set and include the following, then select + Add a condition.
  7. In the Conditions fields, specify whether the rule applies to DescriptionBank text, or Amount. Then choose ContainsDoesn't contain, or Is exactly and enter the value or text to decide how QuickBooks applies the rules.
  8. Hit the settings for the rule. Tap Transaction typeCategoryProduct/servicePayeeTax, and Customer to apply. Note: You may see different options depending on the company settings you’ve turned on.
  9. Press Save.
