Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

Try this workaround

1.  Download and install the version you are moving https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products

2. Cancel when it asks your S/N and code

3. Run migrator tool

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

My problem is the same.  I followed above instructions.

Clicked QuickBooksMigrator file on flash drive

Clicked Move.QuickBooks (application)

I am asked "Do you want to allow this app to make changes on your device?"  I reply  YES

Nothing happens.  The question disappears.  Nothing Happens.

Hello there, RickRo,

If the migrator tool doesn't start after trying to run the file, you may need to update your update your version of Windows 10.

If your Windows 10 is up-to-date and the issue persists, I recommend contacting our desktop support to assist you further. They will be able to check your file. Here's how:

  1. Click Help on the menu.

Thank you MaryLurleenM.

But, if QuickBooks is being migrated to a new computer and I'm having problems installing it, how do I follow your steps on the new computer?    I can't click QB's  Help because I am asking for help installing (migrating) it.

  1. Click Help on the menu.

Good evening, @RickRo. Thanks for reaching back out to the Community.

If you run into issues with installing QuickBook Desktop products or have trouble opening the program, I'm here to lend you a helping hand.

There are a few steps that you need to take to do some basic troubleshooting. Here are the steps:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  2. Use the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
  3. Update Windows.
  4. Manually fix Windows components.
  5. Use Selective Startup to install QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's an article that breaks down the process of each of these steps: Fix Install Errors.

You can also follow the steps provided by my colleague @MaryLurleenM to get in touch with our Desktop Support. They'll assist you with the installation and the migration process of the tool you're trying to use.

I'm going to leave you an article with more information: Installation of the Database Server Manager.

If you hit any bumps along the way, please reach back out and let me know. I'll be watching for a response.

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

Discouraged.

QBTeam has offered several suggestions in a friendly, professional way.  But, still no luck.

I have  QB Desktop Pro 2019 on old computer.  (I know License and product number.)

Can't I simply

  • do a QB Backup on old computer
  • download QB from your site onto new computer
  • enter my license and P/N
  • install backup onto new computer     ? ? ?

I’m here to make sure you’re able to work on your company file on the new computer, @RickRo.

The easiest way to move your files is by creating a backup and putting it in a flash drive. Ready your product and license number and install QuickBooks Desktop on the brand new device.

Here’s how:

  1. Download your version of QuickBooks Desktop. Save the file in a location where you can easily find it.
  2. Open the downloaded file (QuickBooks.exe) and follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. Accept the software license agreement, then tap Next.
  4. Enter the Product and License numbers and click Next.
  5. Pick Express install.
  6. Activate and update QuickBooks Desktop.

Check out these articles for the detailed steps: Install QuickBooks and Move your company files to another computer.

Once done, you can now move the backup company file. Follow the steps to restore it on the new computer. I’m adding this resource for your reference: Restore the backup.

I’m only a couple of clicks away if you need anything else. It’s my pleasure to help. Take care!

Thank you.  This was simple and easy.

(I should have  done this first instead of trying to use Migrator.)

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

This is not about moving the data file.  It is about migrating the full installation to a new computer.  I bought mine as a download, knowing that my computer was getting old and needed to be replaced very soon.  Before buying it, I actually talked to a human at Intuit [!] who assured me "no problem, just call us and we'll take care of the reinstall" or something of that ilk.  Now, no humans.  When I try to use the migration tool, the new computer goes as far as asking me if I want the program to make changes to my computer, but then there is a popup box that says "QuickBooks Migration failed unexpectely".  Nothing else.  If it helps, there are two zip files on the USB drive, and the one called "QBMigInfo" is empty.  I tried it three times, using two different drives.

@DLW3

If the migration tool didn't work, just install it normally on your new machine as mentioned by KhimG.

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

Hello there, @mandienewyear. I'm here to make sure you're able to install QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2020 into your new laptop and get back to business in no time.

When you're unable to utilize the migrator tool, you can download the QBDT software online and install it on your laptop as mentioned above. You just need to make sure your computer meets the system requirements. I'm here to guide you how.

  1. Using your new laptop, download the 2020 version of QBDT. Then, save it somewhere you can easily find it.
  2. Have your product key and license number handy.
  3. Open the downloaded file (QuickBooks.exe) and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Accept the software license agreement, then click Next.
  5. Enter your product and license numbers and click Next.
  6. Pick Express install.
  7. Activate and update QuickBooks Desktop.

After that, you can move your company file to your laptop. To do this, you'll have to first create a backup company file on your original computer. Then, move it to your new computer. You can either put the backup on a flash drive or an external device. Or you can share it if your laptop is on the same network.

Once done, restore your company file on your laptop. I'd recommend checking out this article for the step-by-step guide: Restore a backup of your company file.

Additionally, here's an article that'll further guide you on the basic workflows and tasks you can do using QBDT: Working with QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise. It includes topics about getting started with the system, moving company files, and running your business to name a few.

Please let me know if you need anything else. I'll gladly help. Take care always, @mandienewyear.

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

Hello,

I am trying to move my Quickbooks from my old computer to a new one.  The Migrator Tool did not work at all for me.  I was able to install Quickbooks on my new computer but now I can't open the Quickbooks application on my old computer.  Is that because I used the Migrator?  How do I move the company files?  I am trying to get something to my Tax person this weekend.

Thanks,

Suzanne

Migrator will not open on new computer did all updates ?

Hi, @sgaylor1.

I want to ensure you'll be able to move your QuickBooks to a new computer.

Usually, you must be expecting any error messages when using the Migrator Tool when moving QuickBooks. If I may ask, may I know the specific issue you had when trying to open QuickBooks Desktop on the old computer? As an initial step, you can set up a multi-user network to access your company files from other computers.

  1. In QuickBooks Desktop, go to the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  2. Select Host Multi-User Access. Then select Yes to confirm.

You can open this link for more tips about setting up and installing a multi-user network for QuickBooks Desktop.

On the other hand, you can also manually reinstall QuickBooks to a new computer without using Migrator Tool. You can check out these links for your guide:

  1. Have your product and license info available.
  2. Uninstall the existing QuickBooks application before trying a reinstall.
  3. On the computer where you want QuickBooks Desktop installed, download the installation files or insert the CD.
  4. Install QuickBooks Desktop as you normally would. Once done, proceed with backing and restoring your files.

To get started with using QuickBooks on your new computer, you can also skim through the topics from our help articles. Here's the link: Find QuickBooks help articles for QuickBooks Desktop.

Please let me know how else I can help you with moving QuickBooks to a different computer. I've got your back and am always happy to help. Thanks for coming, wishing you and your business all the best.
