Move company file to a different license

I am in the process of taking over for the current owner. I have started a new company but will be taking over everything of the old. Am I able to copy the current company file into a new license of QB Enterprise and modify it for the new company with out causing issues with the current company file and license? They will still be using it for a while to tidy up things so they will still need access to the their file and license.

Yes, J_BSW. You can copy the current file into the new QuickBooks license.

 

Just create a backup copy from the old company, then restore it to the new QuickBooks. From there, you can make changes.

 

Here's how to create a backup copy:

  1. Click File.
  2. Go to Back Up Company, then choose Create Local Backup.
  3. Choose Local backup, then click Next.
  4. Choose where to download the backup, then click OK.

Then, here's how to restore it:

  1. Click File.
  2. Go to Open or Restore Company.
  3. Choose Restore a backup copy, then click Next.
  4. Choose Local backup, then click Next.
  5. Choose the backup file, click Open, then click Next.
  6. Choose the location where you'll save the restored file, then type a file name.
  7. Click Save.

If you need something else, you can always post in the Community.

If I may tag along on this thread........ we need to load/transfer the  .QBB file from a company that was under an existing multi-company license, into new Windows Pro license.  However, the restore is asking for the old/original admin password - which we don't have, with little chance of getting.  How do we get around that?

Let me share some information about restoring company files, tnecaboard1.

 

When restoring the company file, it will ask you to enter the password for the “Administrator” account into the “Password” field in the “QuickBooks Login” dialog box. If you forgot the password, we can always check the password details in the ReadMe.doc.

You can also contact the previous administrator who created the backup file to enter the password.

 

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment. Then, they'll check on what they can do to restore the company file in QuickBooks.

  1. Click the Help icon on the top menu. 
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help
  3. Tap Contact us.
  4. Select QuickBooks Setup&Navigation and select File Setup & Management
  5. Choose Start a Message or Get Phone Number to connect with our support.

If you didn't able to reset the password with the available tool, contact and ask Support to reset it. Otherwise, consider purchasing a 3rd party password reset service.
