My accountant has qb pro 2016. Can he open the accountant file I have desktop pro 2017?

No, he can work with the same year as his (2016) or one year older only.

Use Accountant's Copy between multiple versions of QuickBooks

Ideally, you should open an Accountant's Copy using the same version (year) of QuickBooks Desktop however, you can still open and work on the Accountant’s Copy using a different version as long as the gap between the client's and accountant's QuickBooks is just one year (given that the accountant has the higher version).

Example

  • If the client has QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2018, the accountant must have QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2018
  • If the client has QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2017, the accountant must have QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2017 or 2018
  • If the client has QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2016, the accountant must have QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2016 or 2017
  • If the client has QuickBooks Enterprise 2018, the accountant must have QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant Edition 2018
  • If the client has QuickBooks Enterprise 2017, the accountant must have QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant Edition 2017 or 2018
  • If the client has QuickBooks Enterprise 2016, the accountant must have QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant Edition 2016 or 2017

If you mean he wants to install your license on his computer, not legal per the Intuit EULA - single user license may be used on up to two computers by that person only.  If he wants your business, he should be willing to purchase the version compatible with your file.

he's saying he will just do a 30 day trial, he won't register. so he doesn't need the  validation code, only needs Product and Key to use it for trail. Do you think that sounds ok?

He can get that if he can find the trial download, although I doubt that he can find 2017.  (Personally, I wouldn't do it.)  What happens next time he needs to work with your file?

You Paid for that; don't give it away to anyone else.

You are the Customer and this person isn't willing to buy the tools required for them to do the work for you? I would find a new accountant.
