The reports are transaction-based, BoroSec.

Once you created transactions and customized the report's date to last year or last fiscal year, the details will show.

Although, if transactions are created and they're not showing in the report, this can be caused by a corrupted file. We'll have to run the verify/rebuild tool to detect the data damage. I'll walk you through the steps:

  1. Click File.
  2. Go to Utilities, then choose Verify Data.
  3. If QuickBooks detected no problems, there's no further action needed. If you receive a message, "Your data has lost integrity", the file is damaged. Just continue to Rebuild Data to correct the problem.
  4. When you Rebuild Data, you'll receive a message to back up your company file, just click OK. The utility starts as soon as the back up is finished.
  5. Click OK when you get the message "Rebuild has completed".
  6. Run Verify Data again to check for remaining data damage.

Once done, pull up the report again, then customize it to show previous year's transactions.

I'll include the article about resolving data damage with your QuickBooks Desktop company file as a future reference.

You can keep us updated after trying the recommended steps. Just leave a comment below and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Thank you so much for your quick response! I do not think it has to do with data corruption. I have attached a screenshot in pdf form to show that the Transaction Detail by Account will show detail for the most recent year, but show only closing entries for previous years when multiple years are specified in the date range. If I pull any year individually, I can see the detail. Why will Quickbooks not allow the comparison of multiple years' data? Thank you again and Happy Thanksgiving!
