Opening company file takes me to a CACHED version. Change?

I have 2 company files. Each time I open one, QB seems to open a CACHED version of the file. I can tell because the file folder has a bunch of numbers in it and ends with CACHE CC or something like that.

First, what the heck is that cached file?? If I open it, is it the SAME VERSION as the company file I would open with File-->Open Company...etc?

Second, I prefer it open Documents--> Quickbooks Data Folder... so I can choose which company file to open. Is there a setting or preference I can change to do that?

Otherwise, I have to go through the long route of File-->Open Company--> then navigate through all my files to find the selected company file. I'd like to avoid that if I can.

Hi @TeriC,

The cached company file that you see is a backup of your original company file, which explains why they have the same version.

For your second question, I suggest you check your preferences where you want the backup should be stored.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the QuickBooks menu.
  2. Click on Preferences, then choose Backup.

This is where you'll see the location the back up will be stored.

If you want to change the location, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Click Back Up.

Additional notes on creating a backup of your company file in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac are in this article: Create a Backup of your company file.

Do you have other questions in mind? Post them below, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

But I don't want to open the backup copy of the file. I want to open the original file, without having to change the path to get to it every time. Is there a way to do that?

Hi @TeriC,

Thank you for your reply.

When you open QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, and it automatically opens the last company file used (which is the backup), you can close it from the File menu.

You'll then see the No Company Open window appear. It lists all the Recent Files used. Select the original company from that list.

As for the location of the original company file itself, if you need it to appear inside a specific directory you'll have to manually copy and paste the file(s) in question. That way when you get to the No Company Open window, you can choose the correct directory by pressing Browse

With that said, I suggest you change the directory of your backup files to a separate folder as well.
