I agree that it's nice to have the option to create a back up in QuickBooks Online just like the Desktop version. However, we can only use the export data file to move the information to another version in QuickBooks.

It strikes me that Export Data <> Full Backup.
Something like MYSQL Database is pretty easy to backup in one command line.
Why third party apps can do it while you cant !

Daily cloud server backup.... is your backup for catastrophic events like hacking, hardware failure etc.
Personally, I need weekly LOCAL backup just in case accountant screw up.
I realize that having local backup makes it easy to jump to competitor :smileyhappy:
But I am happy with QBO
I join in the chorus to have the ability to backup. We are a mid sized business and took the leap of faith to move to QBO. On the one hand I really like some of the flexibility but am getting concerned on some other aspects. As I am spending time learning more about it, I realize it is very easy for any user to make changes which can materially affect our data. Having the ability to restore a backup would be huge in having the comfort that we are not dependent on someone's inexperience to cause serious harm.

Unlike QuickBooks Desktop, QBO is unable to create a backup file since QBO automatically backs your data up. Though you can export your reports and other transactions to excel and save it to your local drive.

These copy and paste replies are a joke. Sure the data is backed up in the cloud, thus preventing the need from us making manual backups. The problem is, there is no way to restore data from a certain point in time, like a manual backup would allow.
I will just parrot what other people are saying, maybe the point will get across some day if enough disgruntled users speak up. There NEEDS to be a way to restore data to a certain point in time, whether it's through manual backups, automated backups, however it is. The option needs to be provided, not through a third party application but through QBO, to restore data.

I just wanted to create another reply so I can give it an additional Cheer.
So tired of 'techs' who only seem to copy and paste lame (and that's putting it nicely) "answers" that don't apply to anybody's reality.
When I do this, QBO tells me my files are too large to export.
What's the fix? And no, I don't want to pay additional money for some other app to have access to the data. That's just ridiculous. The idea is to be able to safeguard my files not add another point of access.
You will get this message when you exceed the maximum size limit in exporting the data to Excel, kbrownew.

Jumping in just to agree that QB Online needs a process for restoring to a certain point in time, especially important in the common case of multiple users updating the data.

Nice to see so many replies to my initial posting.
Since that time, I discovered "Chronobooks", a 3rd party app for QBO backups. For only $5 per month, per client, it was an ideal for our needs and a lot easier than making a conversion copy for QB Desktop.
It appears that the program was so good, that Intuit bought it and is now including it with the QBO Advance subscription. However, it appears that it will no longer be available for any of our clients who are on the
QBO Plus subscriptions. The price differences between the two do not warrant the subscription upgrade for most of our clients ($70 vs $150/month)
There are other 3rd party backup apps available for QBO but I don't currently have a recommendation.
What I do find disheartening is QBO not including this for ALL subscriptions despite the apparent demand from its user base FOR YEARS for such a feature. Now, I'm forced to find another REASONABLY PRICED solution 3rd party solution for something that should be included.
(To the Intuit Employees tasked with moderating this thread, go ahead and pass on our suggestions to the engineers and developers for all the good it will do. I'm not holding my breath!)
I fully see the benefit in performing backups. If QBO is compromised in some manner, our clients will be looking to us for a solution, not Intuit. Therefore, I need to be able to create a useable backup of my client's information.
I couldn't agree more. I used Chronobooks for a year and it was great, but they have priced it out of the typical small business budget. $70/month for a backup is ridiculous.

I was very happy with chronobooks and thought it was great that intuit bought them. Now I'm extremely disappointed that we were not able to keep our chronobooks subscription going at the QBO Plus level. What a bunch of crap. Now I need to look to see if there are other viable solutions once again. What a waste of my time. This should be an option available to all the QBO levels. It drives me nuts that they (intuit) are allocating all their development resources into the advance product. I still can't even remove pricing from the PO's to use as a packing list. Let's flush out the product and give people the backup solution they deserve with all QBO levels of this product. I'm really not happy with the change.

As a tax accountant, I'd like to point out that we do not and should not make adjustments directly into the client's Quickbooks. We use the backup so that we can make changes in a "bubble", and then send them to the company bookkeeper for review and then THEY enter the adjustments. Now that we have no backup copy to work with, we have to reenter the balance sheet and profit/loss in our trial balance software. So you have made the tax preparation process much more difficult.
The "Export data" to Excel QBO option doesn't seem to work very well. I just tried backing up our small company's history before bringing in another data update from our desktop version. It (the export feature) couldn't handle even a limited amount of transaction data from our initial transfer into QBO (or do you expect users to make numerous exports over multiple date ranges and for multiple transactions and lists to backup all the data?). And, if Intuit backs up our QBO data for us, where and HOW does one retrieve it if needed? I see nothing under the gear icon that indicates such a function, or tool exists.
