QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not copy the company file.

I am running QB Desktop 2020 on my brand new MacBook Air (2021) and for the life of me I cannot create a back-up.

I have run utilities to verify the data and ensure nothing is wrong. I have rebuilt the data anyway and still nothing is wrong.

I have tried using an older back-up and using the attachments library but the back-ups only have two files which is the .qb2020 file and the instructions, no attachment.

Please help.

QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not copy the company file.

Do you have QBD running on Parallels or QBD Mac?

Try open a sample file or create a dummy one. Can you backup the file?

QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not copy the company file.

We’ll do a few steps to get this sorted out, jameswatson.

First, let's use a sample file in your QuickBooks and create a backup copy from there just as what Fiat Lux - ASIA  shared. If this works fine using a sample file, let's rebuild your company file again.

If you're still getting the same error when backing up the sample file, let's try creating a different Admin user on your Mac computer.  This is to determine if you have some system issues that prevent the software from creating a backup copy.

If it didn't make any difference, I suggest reaching out to our customer care support so a live agent can take a better look at this.

I'll be around the corner to help if you need anything else in managing your company file. Take care!

I can't seem to create another admin user. I can't find an option to allow for administrative access.

I appreciate all the efforts you've exhausted in performing the troubleshooting steps above.

Please take note that in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 and higher, you’re only able to have one admin. Since you've encountered the same error message, I'd recommend getting in touch with technical supports. This way, we'll be able to pull up your account and investigate the issue.

QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not copy the company file.

I am running quickbooks 2021 on a 2020 Mac using Big Sur Operating system.  I cannot back up any of my quickbooks files.  I called customer support and worked over an hour to try and correct the problem.  I deleted and reinstalled the program. and that did not help.  The support tech did some research and I was told that there is a problem with the program itself for those using Big Sur. I was put on a list of others having the same problem and was told someone would get back to me.  That did not happen.  I was also advised not to close out the program or I would loose my data.

Same issue here, also trying to follow the Contact Us but even though it is before 6pm PT it says everyone is offline.

I was able to make a backup literally yesterday but now it's not working and keeps saying "QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file.  QuickBooks could not copy the company file."

Thanks for sharing your backup concern here in the Community, @slchanco.

I'd like to inform you that we currently have an ongoing issue wherein customers received an error when creating a backup in macOS Big Sur.

Our engineers are now investigating to determine the root cause of this matter so they can apply a fix in a timely manner.

For now, you may consider deleting Plist files and create a backup afterward.

To do that:

  1. Close QuickBooks and any other open applications.
  2. Click Go menu, and while holding down the Option key click on Library.
  3. Double click on Preferences folder.
  4. Look for files named com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX where XX is the year of QuickBooks they are using.
  5. Delete the plist files moving them to the Trash, should empty if possible.
  6. Restart the computer
  7. Open QuickBooks, make sure Backup preference is set correctly and make a backup.

If doing this doesn't make a difference, you can update macOS to the latest version 11.3.1.

On the other hand, I'd also recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. This way, you'll be notified whenever any updates about this matter are made available.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Select the Help menu, and then choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Let's talk.
  5. Choose your preferred way to connect with us.

Let me know how things work out. I'll be right here to help if you need more help with creating a backup or with QuickBooks. Take care!

In the Preferences folder do I delete BOTH (com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.ListOrder.plist) AND (com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.plist) or just the latter?

It's great to see you here again, @slchanco,

You need to remove both PLIST* files from the User and System folder. Once removed, all preferences will revert back to its default settings. Then you can open your QuicBooks after and create the back up file.

The steps are as follows:

Deleting User PLIST

  1. Go to the Finder menu.
  2. Hold down the Option key, then select Library.
  3. Open the Preferences folder.
  4. Find PLIST files that contains com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX, then move them to the Trash.

Note: XX is the QuickBooks version you’re using.

  5. Empty the trash.

Deleting System PLIST

  1. From a new Finder window, open the Macintosh HD.
  2. Go to Library, then Preferences folder.
  3. Find PLIST files that contains com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX, then move them to the Trash.

Note: XX is the QuickBooks version you’re using.

  4. Empty the trash.

I also recommend contacting our QuickBooks Mac Support if you need further guidance with the process. Our representatives can request for a viewing session to guide you and make sure your data is secured.

Again, NOT helpful!

my GO menu does not include Library as an option.

I did a search for Plist files and found only 2 files named cache.plist— nothing with Quickbooks in it.
When I go to update, I am told that I have the latest version.
I worked as a QC tech and tech specialist for over 10 years, I’ve been using QB since it was first on the market, so Please let me know if I can help you solve this issue.

QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file. QuickBooks could not copy the company file.

Deleted both plists as instructed and restarted the computer. Unfortunately while it did restore the default settings of QB, when I tried to back up it still gave the same error message of "QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file.  QuickBooks could not copy the company file."

Thanks for your efforts, hope the fix is resolved and rolled out soon

FYI had to update to macOS BigSur 11.4, but the whole "delete plist and restart" finally worked. Thanks BettyJaneB and Jen_D for your help

OB 2020 R19.0.7 R8 and running OS11.2.3 I am having the same issue. I did just delete the preference files including some of the older ones so as to not cause confusion. I am still getting the message on back up. Would like to be notified when a fix is available. Right now my computer backs up to the cloud so I am not as concerned but will need to be able to back up to give a file to my accountant.
