Re: 2 User Licenses will not allow us to install and use 2nd license

Nothing inherently wrong with your 2 computer 2 license purchase. The problem is your cloud type is probably not appropriate for dynamic file hosting but is just fine for static data storage. You need dynamic hosting which can support the QB database file manager.

Choices.

1. Use one of the computers as always on host and with remote access over secure LAN both computers can use same file at same time.

2. Pay someone like intuit but not intuit to host your file and do manager.

3. Get Microsoft azure or an equivalent not Microsoft product to create your own VLAN in the cloud. This let's you use any old cloud but sets up the cloudlet as if if were a hard drive.

Ignore the rep's posted comments about trouble you have restoring since that is not your trouble nor would her steps fix your issue

Database file  manager software from QB and company file have to be on same hard drive or virtual drive. You cannot share a company file just by tossing it in the air in iCloud. You have have one mac as history and the other as client preferably on a wired LAN. Or buy true hosting from QB or someone else.

So we have 2 licenses and we have 2 computers and we cannot host the file on our own cloud server to use on both CPUs. That seems in opposition to what Inuit told us to purchase.

Re: 2 User Licenses will not allow us to install and use 2nd license

If you have two license numbers you can share a QuickBooks file over a local network.  The two machines have to be on the same subnet.  In most cases this means they have to be talking to the same local router.

You can share a file between two copies of QuickBooks using iCloud or another file sharing service. This sharing is one at a time though - only one computer can access the company at a time.  It also requires QuickBooks Mac 2019 (you didn't mention which version you have).

If you want to have two machines simultaneously work on a file that is being shared on a Wide Area Network (WAN) you have to create a link to put the two machines on the same subnet and have two (or more) licenses.   One way to accomplish this is discussed here:

VPN or VLAN (as Azure calls it) is still all the same, and as I said - QB Database Server Manager must be installed the same place the company file is installed and hosted.

Just as there are Stratus, Cumulus, Cirrus basic cloud types at different heights there are different types of web clouds - some are static and cannot host an open platform others are dynamic and can.

John I believe your describing Windows OS and QuickBooks Desktop for Windows - my understanding is this was about the MacOS and QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Okay, so Desktop for Mac multi-user does not use a database server manager from Intuit - still can't run mac multi-user from a plain old icloud or googledrive is my understanding. They are static storage and not dynamic

Re: 2 User Licenses will not allow us to install and use 2nd license

You can use iCloud and so on in 2019 in the round robin fashion I describe above.  For true multiuser where people are entering data at the same time on multiple machines the QuickBooks Mac Server requires that the machines be on the same subnet.  The subnet is all the sections of the IP address except the last section (which identifies the individual computer/machine).

You can set up a Wide area network to have the same subnet. One way is using LogMeIn Hamachi as described in the QBLittleSquare article.

In any of these cases you can have the file in an iCloud shared folder.  However it isn't a good idea to have multiple machines sharing the same file on an iCloud shared folder while that file is being shared by QuickBooks Mac Server.

Its all rather complicated but I'm trying to be accurate.  If you relax the accuracy its easier to explain.
