chart of accounts

When I started my hobby, I just used QB for writing checks. Now I have grown it to the point where I want to add a much more comprehensive chart of accounts to my program. How can I import the new chart without disrupting my history and present setup? Please don't tell me one account at a time. :-)

You're able to import your new Chart of Accounts lists in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) without disrupting your history and present setup, @sdcarguy. I'm here to guide you how.

You can use IIF files to import your lists and transactions to QBDT. You may first download and install the .IIF import kit as your reference guide for creating and working with your files.

Before you import, please make sure to back up your company file. Then, follow these steps below whenever you're ready to perform the process through QBDT for Windows:

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. Go to the File menu.
  3. Select Utilities.
  4. Choose Import, then select Import IIF.
  5. Select the IIF file you want to import, then select Open.
  6. Select OK to confirm the import.

In case you have QBDT for Mac, you can refer to this article for the detailed steps: Import IIF files using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Also, I'm adding this article to learn more about the tasks you can do using IIF and manage your QBDT company data: Tasks you can do with IIF files.

Additionally, instead of starting from scratch, you can transfer info to and from QuickBooks. This makes it easy for you to convert, upgrade, or create a new company file. To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about managing your Chart of Accounts in QBDT. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

I have not had the time to go follow the great instructions I got here. You will hear the cheer from San Diego when I do. :-)

When I tried to import an iif file from another system, it stalls and doesn't download. The error message refers to line 5 having error or duplicate input. Can I go to the comuter that I am exporting from and clean up the chart, then try to export again?
