Join nowWhen I started my hobby, I just used QB for writing checks. Now I have grown it to the point where I want to add a much more comprehensive chart of accounts to my program. How can I import the new chart without disrupting my history and present setup? Please don't tell me one account at a time. :-)
You're able to import your new Chart of Accounts lists in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) without disrupting your history and present setup, @sdcarguy. I'm here to guide you how.
You can use IIF files to import your lists and transactions to QBDT. You may first download and install the .IIF import kit as your reference guide for creating and working with your files.
Before you import, please make sure to back up your company file. Then, follow these steps below whenever you're ready to perform the process through QBDT for Windows:
In case you have QBDT for Mac, you can refer to this article for the detailed steps: Import IIF files using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Also, I'm adding this article to learn more about the tasks you can do using IIF and manage your QBDT company data: Tasks you can do with IIF files.
Additionally, instead of starting from scratch, you can transfer info to and from QuickBooks. This makes it easy for you to convert, upgrade, or create a new company file. To learn more about this, you can refer to this article: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop.
Let me know how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about managing your Chart of Accounts in QBDT. I'm just around to help. Take care always.
I have not had the time to go follow the great instructions I got here. You will hear the cheer from San Diego when I do. :-)
When I tried to import an iif file from another system, it stalls and doesn't download. The error message refers to line 5 having error or duplicate input. Can I go to the comuter that I am exporting from and clean up the chart, then try to export again?
Thank you for reaching out to us, @sdcarguy.
I'll be glad to help you with your chart of accounts concern.
Could you please send a screenshot of those error messages, including as much of the information you are attempting to upload?
I suggest you also contact QuickBooks Desktop support, they will be able to set up a screen share and look at the files you are attempting to import, making sure it is formatted correctly, etc.
You can also check on chart of accounts in QuickBooks for more information about the chart of accounts.
