restoring company to a 2nd computer. QB 2021

I am so frustrated with QB. Have spent way too many hours trying to resolve this problem with FAQs and internet suggestions. If this doesn't work Intuit is out $400.

My office manager uses QB 2020. She saves a file for me to upload as a local file (thumb drive) to restore the company file so my version is updated with the new data.

Every time I try to upload the file it tells me it is a read only file.  When I get that same error message on my desktop, I can right click the file and go and check the "read only file" box and I can upload the file and have the new numbers.

When I use the same thumb drive on my windows laptop, it also tells me it is a read only file.

When I go to right click the file and unclick the read only box, it isn't checked. So nothing to unclick.

No matter what I do, I can't load this file in to my laptop version of QB (2021).  I did get it to work one time, after spending 2 hours on it. I did so many things in those two hours, I have no idea what I did to get it to work.

If this is going to be a 15 step process every time I need to refresh data, forget it. I just don't have this kind of time to screw with this. Ugh.

Thanks for your time, I am just terminally frustrated.

restoring company to a 2nd computer. QB 2021

Hi Tim.

I want to ensure you'll be able to restore the file to the second computer.

Usually, this error happens if the backup file is read incorrectly on a Windows computer. To isolate the issue, you can rename the QuickBooks company file.

Here's how:

  1. Open Windows File Manager and locate the company file that you will find in C:\ Users\ Public\ Documents\ Intuit\ QuickBooks\ folder with .qbb extension.
  2. Right-click the file and select Rename.
  3. Remove any special characters from the file name like %#@!^&*()_+ and save the file.

Or, copy the company file to the local storage of your computer. Then, restore it in QuickBooks from the new location.
