Restoring older file

I'm here to walk you through in restoring a company file, mforest.

Good job for ensuring that we're restoring a company file correctly. Restoring a backup company file lets us go back to one of our save points and the backup file contains our company data up to the date the backup was made. Let's make sure you restore the most recent file.

When opening the backup in the same folder as your existing company file, it'll ask us if we want to save the company since they have the same company name and we might overwrite our data. To avoid overwriting anything, you can rename your existing company file or the backup so the names are unique. Or you can save the backup in a completely separate folder.

I'll show you how we can restore a backup copy:

  1. From the File menu, click Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy. Then, Next
  3. In the Open a Company window, let's look for the most recent backup we had. Select it and click Open.

You can always look into these articles about restoring a backup and what happens after restoring a company file:

You can always get back to me if you have further questions. Stay safe and take care always!

Restoring older file

After I click open it asks "where do you want to restore the file".  Well of course I want to restore it in Quickbooks, so how do I do that?

Restoring older file

Hey there, Mforest.
You're on the right track. When it's asking, "where do you want to restore the file", it's asking where on your computer or possibly another computer (such as the server) would you like the file placed. When you download the file, you're asked where to save or map it. Make sure to choose a file location you can easily remember. To make it simpler, I recommend creating a new folder on your desktop, naming it QuickBooks and save it there. I'm here if you have any follow up questions.

Restoring older file

I need to restore an older company file from Data Protect backed up from a different computer. Every time I select the correct file, tell it where I want to save it too and tell it to start the restoration it automatically defaults to the most recent automatic backup done on this computer. I had to do some work from home due to weather and need to restore this version of the company file on my normal work computer. How can I do that without the program defaulting to the newest backup version??

Thank you,

Erik

Hi InForChrist!

Thanks for joining this thread. Let me help you in restoring your backup file.

It seems that you saved your backup company file to the same folder as your existing company file. If so, you'll want to rename either one of them to prevent this behavior.

  1. Search and open the File Explorer or Open Windows Explorer and go to the location of the file.
  2. Right-click the file and select Rename. Change the file name and press Enter.
  3. Select Yes to confirm the action.

Check this link for your reference: Rename your QuickBooks Desktop company file

Another option is to move your company file to another location

In addition, you'll want to make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop is updated. Some unusual behavior is only a result of using an outdated version.

I'm here to assist you if you have additional questions.
