Self-Employed Contractor: can't complete W-9 profile (self-setup) without checking "... exempt from backup withholding"

I'm not exempt from backup withholding, but the form won't let me proceed (Next button not clickable) unless I check the box "I am exempt from backup withholding".  I would simply check the box and change it after submitting, however I'm worried that QuickBooks won't let me.  Has anyone run into this before, and if so could you tell me how you resolved the issue?  Just to clarify, I don't have a QuickBooks subscription, but my employer does, and they sent me a link to create an account and fill out W-9/1099 information.  Also, I tried to create an account before I got the email invite, so I'm not sure if that's an issue.  Thanks!

Hi there, @rpoulson.

We have an investigation currently in place concerning about W-9 invite link that doesn't process without checking all IRS Certification criteria. Our product engineers are now prioritizing this so you can get back to your business as soon as possible.

For now, I recommend reaching out to your employer so that they can fill out the information for you. Also, it would be best if you can ask them to give us a call. This way, we can add their account details to the list of the affected users. This will also make sure that they will be notified through email once the issue is fixed.

At the end of the year, your client will submit your final forms to the IRS. Then, we’ll invite you to view your 1099s online. All you need to do is to click on the link in the email you'll receive. Also, you can log in to your account and go to the Documents section to view and print your 1099.

I'm always here to help if you have any other concerns or questions. Just tag my name in the comment section and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for joining on this thread, @ScoutE.

I want to ensure your contractors will able to hit the Next button, and the information will show up in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I've checked our reports, and there's no open investigation at this time. With this, I'd suggest to let your contractor log in via incognito to isolate the problem. These browsers won't save any history or cache. Sometimes full of cache can cause the option to misfunction.

You can use these hotkeys below:

  • Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Microsoft Edge)

From there, re-click the Next tab to check if it's already performing appropriately. If that works, I'd recommend you to go back to your regular browser and initiate clear the cache. Doing in other supported browsers is a dominant decision too.

I've added articles about updating W-9, 1099 MISC, and other related topics.

Don't hesitate to mention my name in the comment section if you have follow-up questions. I'm always happy to help.
