Temporarily using another computer to access my quickbooks data

Hi, I am meeting with a new tax preparer and I want to use my old laptop to be able to show her my Quickbooks data, which is currently all on my desktop (that I cannot take to the meeting...) I do NOT want to transfer my data to the laptop, I just want to be able to show the data on my laptop just on this one occasion. How can I do this? Do I copy the .dmg files over to my old laptop? Thank you for your help in advance.

Hey there, assawagafarm.

You're right. You just need to create a backup copy of your company file from your computer, then restore the copy to your laptop using (.dmg) files.

To check the location where QuickBooks for Mac stored the backup, go to QuickBooks Preferences > Backup. If the backup is not on the specified folder, go to the spotlight (Magnifying glass icon) and search for files with .dmg extension.

You can also check out this article for the visual guide: Restore a backup (.dmg) in QuickBooks Mac

If you bump into any troubles restoring the backup copy, you know where to find me. Just leave a comment below and I'll be there for you.

Temporarily using another computer to access my quickbooks data

I have this same desire, to open my desktop’s current COMPANY file on the version of QB2016 I have on my laptop.  So I make the backup, open the disk image on the laptop, copy the .qb2016 to where I want on my laptop. I double-click on that, but as QB starts to open, it warns:

QuickBooks can not open this company file because it was created with an incompatible version.

But I’ve already updated, and both versions of QB2016 say they’re the most recent version and don’t need to be updated.

I select OK anyway (the only option, and QB2016 launches on my laptop, but there are no records after 08/31/16…And of course I have many many entries after that date, I use QB almost daily on my desktop!

The laptop, after saying it’s updated, says it’s Version V17.0.4 R5
The desktop, however, says it’s Version V17.2.25 R26

Good day, alkieffer1.

Transferring file from one computer to another is easy and simple. You’ll just need to back up your file from the old computer then save it on a portable location. Once done, you’ll have an option to restore a portable file on the QuickBooks installed in your laptop.

For the step by step instructions about this process, please check this article: Move your company files to another computer.

Don’t hesitate to reach us anytime you need assistance while working with QuickBooks.

The error message happened after I loaded the company backup on the newly installed 2013 QB premier contractors program. Perhaps this is not supported on windows 10?

Perhaps the QB 2013 premier contractors edition is not supported with windows 10?

Thanks for checking in with us, Edaydesign.

Outdated versions of QuickBooks has different system requirements than the newer supported ones. QuickBooks Desktop 2013 Premier Contractors edition is not supported with Windows 10. The system requirements for QuickBooks 2013 includes the following:

  • Windows 8, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed (QB R4 and later required)
  • Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP: QuickBooks Pro / Premier minimum requirements
  • Windows 7, Vista, and XP: QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions minimum requirements

You can retain the installed file in Windows 7 to avoid compatibility issues. If you want to use QuickBooks in Windows 10, just upgrade the software to the latest one. Just use our trial version if you want to file taxes in QuickBooks or just want to try the features in the updated editions.

All you need to do is create a backup copy of your QuickBooks 2013 data, then upgrade it to an edition that is 3 years higher. For example, you can restore a 2013 back up to a 2016 software, then make a backup from there. The back up is essential because once it's updated, it can no longer be downgraded. Then, use the .QBB file to restore the information anytime.

Once done, restore the 2016 backup to another 3 year version (2019). Then from 2019 to our 2021 trial version to use QuickBooks in Windows 10. Please note that our trial versions will only work for up to 30 days. The option to skip this process and jump directly to the newest versions is unavailable. Everything must be done in hierarchy.

If you need assistance, I'd suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and help you with this one. You may send a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead. To ensure we address your concern, our representatives are available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM on Saturdays, PST. See our support hours and types for more details about this one.

Visit our QuickBooks Help Articles page for more insight s about managing your business in your software.

I'm just one post away if you need a hand with running transactions or any QuickBooks related. I'll be here to ensure your success. You have a good one.
