Temporarily using another computer to access my quickbooks data

Hi, I am meeting with a new tax preparer and I want to use my old laptop to be able to show her my Quickbooks data, which is currently all on my desktop (that I cannot take to the meeting...) I do NOT want to transfer my data to the laptop, I just want to be able to show the data on my laptop just on this one occasion. How can I do this? Do I copy the .dmg files over to my old laptop? Thank you for your help in advance.

Hey there, assawagafarm.

You're right. You just need to create a backup copy of your company file from your computer, then restore the copy to your laptop using (.dmg) files.

To check the location where QuickBooks for Mac stored the backup, go to QuickBooks Preferences > Backup. If the backup is not on the specified folder, go to the spotlight (Magnifying glass icon) and search for files with .dmg extension.

I have this same desire, to open my desktop’s current COMPANY file on the version of QB2016 I have on my laptop.  So I make the backup, open the disk image on the laptop, copy the .qb2016 to where I want on my laptop. I double-click on that, but as QB starts to open, it warns:

QuickBooks can not open this company file because it was created with an incompatible version.

But I’ve already updated, and both versions of QB2016 say they’re the most recent version and don’t need to be updated.

I select OK anyway (the only option, and QB2016 launches on my laptop, but there are no records after 08/31/16…And of course I have many many entries after that date, I use QB almost daily on my desktop!

The laptop, after saying it’s updated, says it’s Version V17.0.4 R5
The desktop, however, says it’s Version V17.2.25 R26

Good day, alkieffer1.

Transferring file from one computer to another is easy and simple. You’ll just need to back up your file from the old computer then save it on a portable location. Once done, you’ll have an option to restore a portable file on the QuickBooks installed in your laptop.

For the step by step instructions about this process, please check this article: Move your company files to another computer.
