Unable to use QuickBooks

I am running QuickBooks Premier 2010 on a Windows 10 computer. Was working normal until yesterday and then this happened:

1. I opened up QuickBooks and got a message that Quickbooks has stopped working and windows will close to program.

2. Ran the quickbooks file doctor on my company file. Came back with no issues.

3. I tried holding down the ctrl button when opening QuickBooks. Was able to create a sample company file. Quickbooks has stopped working came up and QuickBooks shut down again.

4. Ran the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool:

Errors Detected: Repair Installed Components

Failed Component: Component_Repair_Win10

Proceeded to start repairs.

Rebooted computer

5. Opened Quickbooks. Still get the the Quickbooks has stopped working error.

6. Uninstall and reinstall the software on the computer. I attempt to register the software and get an error.

7. Attempt to open with option to register later. Still fails with the same Quickbooks has stopped working error.

8. I uninstalled the latest Windows Update. No change.

9. Ran memory and disc tests. No issues.

Can anyone thing of anything else to try? Did my version of the software become unusable overnight on purpose?

Even though no QB version older than 2015 is supported on Windows 10 machines, many people were able to get it installed and running until the recent anniversary update.  You will have to upgrade now.  QB 2017 products are now out (check Amazon for best prices).

There is a seven year gap between 2010 and 2017 products, so you might need to "step up" your upgrade.  Currently there is a free 2012 version that you can use if you have access to a Win 7 machine.  There was a 2015 free trial that was recently removed, we're hoping to get it reinstated so that you could go from, e.g., 2010 to 2012 to 2015 to 2017.

30-day free trial of QB 2012:

No, you can upgrade your file from 2011 directly to 2017, although if you have problems you might need to "step up" the conversion.  If you purchase from Intuit they should help for no charge.

Yes, the Anniversary Win 10 update killed all non-supported versions of QB (anything older than 2015) that had been running.  QB 2010 IS supported on Win 7, which is why it works for you.  In order to use QB on Win 10 machines, you will have to upgrade.  Since 2017 is now out, go for the extra years' support and get it.

It depends on how old your current version is. If it is fairly recent you should be able to just open your current QBW file with the new version. If it is too old you will need to "step up" the upgrade, e.g., from 2006 to 2008 to 2012 to 2017. If you purchase from Intuit they should help with that at no extra charge.

My QB 2010 version was working fine until yesterday that I did the "update from hell". I have tried the solutions and nothing works. "Support" was useless; they just want to push the 2017 so you have to spend the money.

"they just want to push the 2017 so you have to spend the money."

Oh, come one; look at the reality of the situation you have put yourself in. Intuit has had a three-year lifecycle for decades. You got 5 or 6 years from a program not supported beyond 3 years. And Micro-Soft updated and controls Windows 10, not Intuit.

You bought newer computers or updated, which means it is time to get program meant to run on them. You are putting your data at risk every day, even if you get an incompatible program to run. You are trying to avoid buying a business program that is a business expense, and under $200.

Only you can decide what your data is worth to you.

Re: Unable to use QuickBooks

Quickbooks 2019 recently downloaded but can't open it

Re: Unable to use QuickBooks

I've got your back, Tory1.

We've got just the steps that'll help resolve this problem.

Situations like this occur when QuickBooks processes running in your background get stuck. A quick and easy way to resolve this is to download and use the QBRefresher Tool. With this tool, the program is able to perform a mini-repair to get everything sorted out.

For additional insight on how to resolve this and the link to download the tool, I'm also including this article: QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start or won't open

That should do it. Please keep in touch if you need further assistance, or if there's anything else I can do for you. Have a great day!

Followed the same procedure to correct, contact QuickBooks support and I just end up in the same place with the same problem.

Has anyone found a resolution?

Re: Unable to use QuickBooks

The most common reason for this error is when you click its icon multiple times, Adam Zupkoff.

Running the QuickBooks Refresher Tool will help fix this error. Since the same thing happens, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. They can check your account further why the error keeps on appearing.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Go to the Help menu, and then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click the Contact Us button.
  3. Enter Failed Component: Component_Repair_Win10 as your keyword in the Ask a question field.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Select either Talk to a Specialist or Message an Agent.

If you have other concerns, please let me know. Thank you.
