Why does the QBO not log the user out gracefully?

When not using the QBO app for awhile, it logs the user out.   The app should do this  gracefully and ask the user to log back in again.   Instead, the app appears to be working normally but gives cryptic errors like:  "Unexpected token < in JSON at postition 0".    I have had calls from clients to fix their "broken" QBO when it displays raw code like this.

The programmers should look at Intuit Proseries for an example of a graceful timeout logout and follow the example.

Re: Why does the QBO not log the user out gracefully?

Hi @AirKevin,

Thank you for pointing out this situation to us. We always appreciate being provided with an opportunity to further improve on the product, so it can meet most of our user's needs.

Getting back to what you said, a quick refresh for browsers will get you right back to the log in screen. It's a little bit different for the desktop app.

Let me show you how:

  1. Click the Help button.
  2. Select Reset App Data.

For this security feature where the system automatically logs the user out after a set amount of time, can be extended. By default, it's set to an hour, but we can extend that to 3.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Move to the Advanced tab.
  3. Look for the Other preferences section, then click the option Sign me out if inactive for.
  4. You can change the value to the maximum, which is 3 hours.

It also goes without saying, I'll be forwarding this feature request you mentioned to our product developers.

You can also view this article: QuickBooks App for Windows and Mac General support. It lists basic troubleshooting steps you can do with the app, along with the steps where you can download the app, and how to uninstall it too.

I'd be glad to provide further assistance if you need it. Leave a comment below and I'll get back to you.

Re: Why does the QBO not log the user out gracefully?

Thanks for the help, especially for pushing this little irritant back to the programmers to clean up.

To fix this, I always shut down the app and restarted, however to brought up an interesting option:

  1. Click the Help button.
  2. Select Reset App Data.

Can you elaborate?  My help button does not have this option, only a search window and contact us button.  I did try to type this phrase in, but no luck.
